Cultre refrences what are they based on ?

Hi as anyone knows there are so many references to pop cultre and history in FO I was just wandering if anyone can solve a few of them.
Post what you know or think they are based on and lets see if some new ones pop up.

The Shi from san fransisco in FO2 I know there are some links to the name shi based in chinese history.
But there is a book by Phillip K dike intitled the man in the high castle based on a alternative universe where Japan and the nazi's won ww2, and the United states were split mostly into two regions with the japanese controlling San fransisco as their capital.
So yes I know the Shi were in fact Chinese not Japanese that said the FO takes place in a war where China vs America is the central historical focus. but I still have a feeling the two alternate San Frans are linked.
So what do you think? am I just clutching at straws here, and can you think of any more ingame content that has a real world or fictional basis.

"The Shi-huang-ti was a Chinese submarine that crashed in San Francisco during the Great War. The descendants of the crew settled in the ruins of the city and became known as the Shi. The remains of this vessel were probably used to help build the Palace and the ship's onboard supercomputer was established as the Emperor."

The name of the Shis' submarine, Shi-huang-ti (始皇帝), means "Original Emperor" in Chinese, and was the title created by the first Emperor of China for himself. Huang-ti (皇帝) means "Emperor" and Shi (始) means "origin".

Out of all the Factions the Shi are the most advanced and mysterious.

Not sure if this helps, just getting info of the net and posting it. I have not read the book so talked about, sounds interesting. So I can't say if the book and Shi are the same.

I think http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki typically lists known references on their page.

Just on the other power group in San Fran.... Black Isle assures us that any similarity between the "Church of Hubology" and any real world people or organisations is completely coincidental.

Broken Hills is named for an Australian mining town.

The Masticator is of course insipred by Tyson.

Thanks I checked the vault for a few but as you said Styles the name of the sub gives the Shi thier name thanks for that info :foodndrink:. And thanls agent_c for the broken hills infomation.
Ah and who does not love a monty reference francis :) .

I may have been wrong with the reference but considering the author is famous for his works on sci-fi and FO3's android quest was based on blade runner, which in turn was based on his book Do androids dream of electic sheep? as well. It would not suprise me if one of the dev's of FO2 gave a little wink to the concept.
