Is Faydra an example of early ghoulification?

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:47 am

I was just curious because it wasn't only only Faydra, the slaver in charge of those arena matches, but a couple of other slavers as well that look almost as if they are turning into ghouls and are at the early stages.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Faydra

I'm not positive if she's slowly losing her skin from radiation or is just horribly scarred. I'm not even positive this isn't an early sign of changing into a trog. Does anyone else know what this might be?

They're slowly turning in to Trogs, not ghouls.

Yep, they're sick. That's the "plague" they keep talking about finding a cure for.

Actually, it usually does happen over an extended period of time.

Thank you so much for the quick response! As for ghoulification happening over an extended period of time, I would think that skin would start falling off over time and possibly look similar to this? I know there is a bit of debate over the ghoul process since Moira instantly becomes a ghoul after blowing up Megaton. I've heard that was a continuity error though.

It was certainly a departure from the game world's lore prior to Fallout 3. Bethesda owns the IP now, though, so if they say it can be instantaneous then I guess it can. :D

I thought the initial generation of ghouls were instantly ghoulified due to the extreme radiation from the nukes, but later ghouls were often turned over time due to the less, but constant amount of radiation...I could've just imagined that though.

If you're talking about the surviving residents of Vault 12 (a.k.a. the people of Necropolis), they were exposed to moderate levels of radiation over a period of time due to their vault door being purposely defective. They didn't turn into ghouls instantly, either. AFAIK Fallout 3 was the first Fallout game to feature insta-ghouls.

Ghoulification is not an instant change. Don't bring up Moira Brown please. She is the only one and it goes against canon. Becoming a ghoul takes years even fallout 3 tells us this but for some reason the devs F***ed up with Moira. Even the Devs of Beth can make a mistake now and then. Also fallouts go by the good ending blowing up megaton falls under bad ending therefore there's another strike against instant ghouls.

Anyways it's been said the people in the Pitt are becoming Trogs.

Naw Wasn't talking about Necropolis, was actually talking about people who lived in the cities, who were unable to pay for a vault spot or get to their vault, and they hid out in makeshift bomb shelters. Of course...that might be from Fallout 3, which then it would fall under the same category as Moria turning into insta-ghoul.

Jamie (or Jason), the guy who you follow in the Dunwich Chambers, turns into a ghoul in what can be considered an instant.

He turns into a ghoul in a couple of day to weeks. We don't know anything about him before he went to the building. He could have been becoming a ghoul already. Second the Dunwich Building smacks for Magic! The book his father had the Necronomicon, then the man in point lookout that wants to use it to control the mutant hillbillies. A case that Magic or some other unknown force was involved.

Brown was healthy and showed no signs of becoming a ghoul. You can't survive a nuclear blast from that close. Good endings are the canon endings. If FO3 is talked about in FO4 they will talk about how the Lone Wanderer helped DC and saved everyone. Not some that blew up Megaton. If Brown became a ghoul in any other way (Playing a good character) it might have a case to be canon. Fallout's past makes it clear that becoming a ghoul takes years. FO3 says the same thing.

Brown was a mistake, it was something to show the fans to say that she is the "annoying man" that Beth has in their games. Kinda like saying not even an A-Bomb can kill this annoying person.

That's still an instant compared to the years it had previously been established as... Moira also was exploring the area around Megaton, not in the city itself.... Basic ground structures in Hiroshima stayed standing only 100 yards from ground zero, so just simply being close to the blast isn't an automatic death sentence (in Fallout anyways).

I read, I read, relax.... changing your font size and color is unneeded. It wasn't the Necronomicon anyhow, but the Krivbeknih... and I don't accept the existence of 'magic' in Fallout. One tiny reference to a ghost in FO2, and some goofy black obelisk isn't enough evidence. Regardless of whether or not a week or two weeks isn't considered instant when compared to years, introducing some magical ghoul creating book further dilutes the existing lore they already broke with Moira. The canon ending will indeed avoid Moira as ghoul, but will not have any effect on whether or not Jaime turned into a ghoul. And according to the existing lore, turning into a ghoul requires FEV or radioactive exposure over years, not magic spells and sleeping in a haunted house for a week.

Sorry about making the font bigger and changing colour. I agree I don't like the idea of Magic in fallout. I like Necronomicon over Krivbeknih :P. Still my other point remains, we don't know anything about him. He could have been well on his way to becoming a ghoul. Also the Lore about FEV and Radiation making a ghoul was changed by the Devs of Black Isle and I trust them to make changes over the Devs of Beth. I think we can agree that the canon ending will take Moira's instant transformation out of the picture. So now we are left with Jaime.. Jaime could have been becoming a ghoul already or some unknown force (like Magic) could have made him a ghoul.

With the Book and Black obelisk and the guy in point lookout a case can be made that it's magic and therefore Jamie is not Canon.

Only reason why people want Moira's transformation to be canon is so they can have a play as a ghoul option. I don't see that happening, there will not be a Fallout were a human character can become a ghoul. At least not a good one. For it to be a good one are becoming a ghoul would make people's reactions change and the game different, to much work it would be like making two games in one. Would have to make changes for male and female characters, that's even more work. It's not going to happen.

That's fair, although... if turning to a ghoul takes years, the likelihood is that there are symptoms visible well before the last two weeks.... It could infact be argued that a dormant cell or gene or the such that is carried for two years and then over the course of two weeks it activates and fully transforms the carrier, is kinda instant... In the end, we clearly agree in theory. Ghouls should take extended periods to transform, magic belongs in TES, Bethesda wanted to change (or didn't understand) the existing lore. Right?

Agreed, With Moira and Jamie, Beth just did not understand the lore. They made very small changes to test the waters. It's their first Fallout after all. Could be why they asked Obsidian to make New Vegas other then needing time to make the next TES (so they can learn more). They could have picked any company so why the people that made the original fallouts? The case against Moira and Jamies' instant ghoulification is alot stronger then the case for it.

Maybe this is just the end of the fanservice for us old school fans. Maybe they included instant ghouls (just add some Nuka and stir) so that they could include ghouled PC's.... Paranoid, maybe...

For once in my life I want to be an optimist and go with "they want to learn more." They admitted that they did not study the older fallouts, I doubt they even played the originals. Might have got some unpaid intern to play them but he cheated and used wiki vault jk :P (but they did say they did not ask the original fallout Devs to many questions). I hope New Vegas is the start of a good friendship between the to companies and may they make awesome fallouts and alot of money :D.

I just don't see how a fallout game can be done well if we start as a human and become a ghoul. I would want the people to react to me as a ghoul. To react to me as a female ghoul and different if I was a male ghoul. That his a butt load of work. I can see a fallout where we start as a ghoul and finish as one.

Another problem with becoming a ghoul, people will compain that they are stuck as one. They will want a cure! that would mess with fallout lore even more.

Beth tested the waters with Instant ghoulification,Magic and Aliens all three are meeting with alot of debate and hate and not just on this forum. It might just be best to stay away from those areas. Fallout is very rich without those.

Plus, he could've been there for 50 years for all we know. The holotapes aren't dated.

I think Moira wasn't really a ghoul, because her voice wasn't different either. She and the PC, not knowing the nuances of ghoulification, just thought she was. What really happened was severe burns and skin melting from the sudden heat blast.
