Quick geographic question.

On the Map of Tamriel that came with Oblivion ( http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:TamrielMap.jpg ) there is a large unnamed island Between Morrowind and Skyrim, but is more north of Morrowind. It's a different colour so that makes me think it's either sovereign or another province that's too small to name. It could be a location in Skyrim, but probably not, I was just wondering. Any help is appreciated.

That's Solstheim, the focus of the second Morrowind expansion, Bloodmoon. You're correct in that it's not part of either province, mainly because no one wants to live there, and it's inhabited mostly by small, tribal groups of Nords and an imperial fort with a token presence.

That's Solsthiem. I can't remember if it belongs to Morrowind or not. I think so. Nevermind, apparently it belongs to no one.

I wonder if we can go to Solstheim from Skyrim. I'd be a little sad if we couldn't. If you tried to swim to MW, you could get attacked by infinite slaughterfish.

You mean like every time you go in the water ever in TES?

Well, according to lore Solstheim belongs to no province. It is mentioned in oblivion that the Nords are trying to take over the island so....

Why does no one want to live there?

It has a climate and geography closer to Skyrim than Morrowind even though it's closer to Morrowind and the locals don't live outsiders.
Spoiler
In Oblivion, characters mention rumors that the Nords are attempting to capture the whole of Solstheim, and want to destroy the Imperial fort. It is also said that money ran out for the Raven Rock colony. And after the Argonian invasion of Morrowind the Dunmer fled to Solstheim.

Why does no one want to live there?

It's mostly considered an inhospitable wasteland...the neighboring nations mostly seem to want it just because they don't like being close to a piece of land without declaring it's theirs.
