The World of TES

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2009 2:12 am

Is the world that you play in within the Elder Scrolls the greatest world ever created for the purpose of play through a video game? There are plenty of games with jaw dropping story bases, and Warcraft has a pretty distinct and unique story as well but is TES the most well developed story in turns of the creation of a unique world that is still developing and shaping throughout our playing of it? So many people write fan fics of this game here on this site and so many of them are surely book worthy. I'm sure Beth wouldn't mind reading some unknown writers piece and thinking it would make perfect sense to be part of the real history of the game. This world is so large it can basically be molded by everyone that chooses to do so, and it has been. Really who knows what the next big plot twist in the story will truly be. (P.S keep talk of the next game in the appropriate thread.

Anyone else have an opinion on this topic?

It's certainly a very well developed world with really great lore, but I don't know if I'd call it the best ever.

It allows massive immersion. This is so great about it. You can write a thousand times more detailed and more rich background stories, but if you get so detailed there is no space for anothers imagination to fill the blanks, or look at things from another point of view, a part of the immersion is lost.

I'd say the world is perfectly balanced between established background, and things that are not so black and white, but shades of grey. Even if it's not the greatest world ever created, it's the one I feel like I am most part of.

Greatest ever? No. My favorite game world is still Termina. TES is deep, and that's essentially why I'm here, but most of that depth has never manifested itself in the game world, just the articles.

you mean Morrowind/Daggerfall? yes they are pretty epic.

a whole different epic level then TES "LOTR wannabe" Oblivion, not even a highspeed space elevator can help Oblivion catch up.

it is very good for sure, one of the best out there, and story & lore, historical and mythic beings is knitted together regardless of tes title, more or less, but best ever ?

sacrifice have had one of the most unique settings I ever seen in a game to take one example, clearly different so hard to compare, tes is very good of course in its own settings :)

I think TES only has the right to be one of the best game worlds is because of how much history it has and how much it has been developed. I'm not saying that it is necessarily the best world as I know of really great ones but it is the most current and well developed.

I wouldn't go as far as to call it the best ever, but it is a fairly well developed fictional universe, especially for a video game. There just aren't many other games out there that give you so much information. Of course, in other mediums, there are a number of much better worlds, especially books, it makes sense, though. For books to be good, they NEED a good story, and while a good story doesn't necessarily need a world with a detailed back story as long as what parts actually effect the story are good, when it comes to speculative fiction, having a well developed universe can give a good basis for writing some great stories, as long as the writers don't try to cram so much information into your mind at one time that it disrupts the pace of the story, which is something the Elder Scrolls does fairly well as most of the lore is told through optional books. The only parts that you're told about during quests are those that you need to know in order to understand the story.

I would say it could quite easily be called the best game world ever. What other game-worlds offer even a portion of the depth that TES does? I would love it if all rpgs had such in depth and unique lore, but as far as I can tell none of them do; they don't even come anywhere close.

The Elder Scrolls definitely is epic. Not many other fictional universes have as rich lore, background and history.
