Floating back equipment and sheaths with straps

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2009 11:48 am

When I played red dead redemption I saw the one problem mainstream gaming has ignored forever. A holster for weapons carried on your back!!! The one thing I want is a strap adhering a weapon to my body and not floating around my back like I am magnetic. This is a big nit pick of mine but it seems as valid as any complaint. I hear allot of arguments for immersion in games and well nothing lets you know your playing a video like a free floating claymore on your back. I remember when I played oblivion and the first weapon I equipped had a sheath I went crazy! It was the first game I got for my xbox 360 and it made me think "there really is something to this next gen thing" The arrows depleted when I shot them it was awesome! Now for Skyrim I want that next part a strap that connects these weapons to my character. What do you guys think? Is this a null subject to bury or do I have a valid argument. I could mention other things and I know red dead is a whole other game in of itself
I just think elder scrolls could bring the idea full circle.

John Marston's outfits were pretty easy to model around though. TES has many more inherent clipping issues.

But I agree, it's time some effort was made to remedy this.

New engine new start right? They can add character animations until there blue in the face but it wont make floating equipment any less immersion breaking from my perspective anyway.

I actually haven't noticed it really. Although I always play in first-person.

I noticed this in New Vegas and it bugged me as well. An idea that just came to mind is maybe we should be able to buy things to hold weapons, we could buy different styles. I'm not sure maybe we should just automatically get them with the weapon but a new equipment slot for this would open up customization more.

Yea I do a good deal of first to third switching. I mean if it came down to it would be good to know they just spent 5 min on it to work something out. I will get elder scrolls V regardless of it. But I hope it gets brought up come fallout 4 time when it might become a possibility. If you have only X number of quick switch weapons why not have a holster for each weapon?

Even playing in first person, I still notice that any NPC with a sheathed weapon has it floating behind their back or beside their hip.

On the one hand, it's an improvement from Morrowind, where the weapons just appeared from out of thin air. But as the OP said, after playing RDR, the floating weapons are a lot more conspicuous.

I would like to see sheathes with straps, but it is just a cosmetic thing, so it won't really ruin my enjoyment of the game if they don't have it.

It can be time consuming to implement but if they got that to work to some minor extent I would be happy. You just need it to work with most armor in the game even if it clipped 1/3 of time I would be happy. Skyrim will still be my top title of 2011 regardless of this little nit pick of mine. I just want it to be look into is all. I have an endless number of hours of playtime for all of Bethesda game under my belt and this is first thing I jump on when I hear they got another one on the way.

I like the idea of buying different sheathes, that would be pretty cool; but yes, this needs to be remedied. Maybe each weapon is accompanied by its own sheath. Smaller swords would have belts attached to their scabbard; larger swords would have a back holster with a strap attached that would come across the front of the character.

I just hope I'm not fighting more with my weapon's hilt than my opponent. :P

To be honest, it's really not that big a deal to me. I would like it to be implemented, and it would add immersion, but I don't pay that much attention.

having sheathes/straps for the weapons that went on your back would be nice...

but i was just happy the weapons showed up on your body, since morrowind didnt have that...

having your weapon appear on your body when sheathed was great, added to customization... which was desperately needed, since bethesda had taken away 90% of the customization... <_<

that was one of my biggest problems with oblivion... pauldrons were glued to the matching cuirass, gloves came glued together like boots, etc... ALOT of the clothes in the game were just full outfits, of which you could change nothing about... couldnt mix and match armor, clothes, robes, or anything like that!

incase you're wondering, my other big problem was freedom... only had about half as much as morrowind's freedom... cant count how many doors that were completely inaccessible, no matter how powerful my magic was, and even despite me having the skeleton key...

anyway, back on topic... im just hoping they add a few more details to weapons appearing on your body, and bring back the full customization with outfits/armors... if i wanna wear individual pieces from 5-6 different suits of armor, plus a robe, then i wanna be able to!

...guess that wasnt exactly on the topic of sheathes, but... whatever. :whistling:

If you're wearing metal armor then they can put magnets, and if it's fabric then velcro.

Agreed. All swords and daggers ought to have sheathes, and while we're at it, put in loops to hang hafted weapons from.

And get staves (and any other pole weapon that shows up) off the back altogether. Have the character carry it like a walking stick.

Yes, please. I always thought sheathing weapons without scabbards was a bit of a contradiction and it looked quite bad to be honest. I also agree on keeping pole weapons off the back.
