Can I join all the factions simultaneously?

Post » Wed Dec 16, 2009 9:35 pm

So right now I've just been declared the Nerevarine and I have to get the Great Houses and the Ashlanders to name me Hortator, and it seems like a good opportunity to take a break from the main quest and do something else for a while. I joined the thieves guild and I'm tempted to join the Morag Tong too, but I couldn't find out in my searching online, if there will be any bad consequences from joining all of the guilds. I want to join all of them but if joining one will make the members of another guild hate me then I would reconsider... so I ask whoever's reading, can I join all of the guilds, or will it just turn into a big headache?

You can join all of the factions except the Great Houses. You can only have one of those. Of course, I doubt you have the skills to get very far in all of them, but you could at least join.

I'd really hope not. It's stupid and unrealistic to be everyones friend and not step on anyones toes.

I join all the guilds (and 1 House) in nearly every game I play and have no problems.

But since you're already in the Thieves Guild there will be a slight problem with the Fighters Guild "Code Book" quest if you decide to join them. You will have to either pickpocket the book (which is quite difficult) or taunt/frenzy and kill a thieves guild member. This will reduce your reputation with the Thieves Guild but that reputation loss can be made up rather easily later on.

Yeah all I'm really wondering if it will make certain NPCs not talk to me anymore or stuff like that. Seems like I'm in the clear so thanks for your fast replies :)

There is one notable instance where the fighter and thieves guild conflict. From the wiki:

Spoiler
This conflict appears during the Code Book quest for Eydis Fire-Eye in Balmora. Once you complete this quest, you will no longer be able to join the Thieves Guild, but being a member of the Thieves Guild makes the quest harder to complete. There are however quite a few ways around this:

1. Pickpocket the book from Sottilde
2. Taunt and then kill Sottilde for the book
3. Persuade Sottilde to give you the code book and then talk to Sugar-Lips Habasi to join the Thieves before talking to Eydis Fire-Eye to complete the Code Book quest.
4. Do the Thieves Guild quest that need the Bitter Cup to help persuade Eydis Fire-Eye to betray the Camonna Tong, the Code Book quest will be skipped.

Otherwise, you're in the clear. The intention of the original designers was to make guild access dependent very closely upon stats, and there was some talk of preventing players from joining one guild/house that was antagonistic to another (for example, the Mage Guild and the Telvanni). These were dropped in the interests of letting players have a more "complete" experience, though therre are mods that try to restore these restrictions for those who want them.

You can join but you can't progress, it's not possible unless you cheat by fortifying skills at the moment of advancement. Actually, I have not tried advancing in this manner (I just don't play that way) but I assume it's possible?

It's very possible to join every guild and make top rank in each WITHOUT using trainers, cantrips, cheats, etc. (I've done it many many times).

the telvanni hate you if you join the mages, and vice versa, but you can still join both.

You can also join all Great Houses (and complete their questlines) if you download the mod for it.

Fortified levels don't count for advancement, just training.

Ok, so it isn't possible in the way I suggested. Odd because, at that very moment, your skills would match whatever requirement a particular guild has set in order to advance. It is actually a good thing though, well thought-out in terms of mechanics at least.

You can join both mages/Telvanni and lead both factions easily. The beauty with these games is that there is "more than one way to skin a cat."

EDIT: More ways to skin a Khajiit I mean...

It's the base level that counts. On the other hand, you could do some of what you want by fortifying your attributes so that you could get training as high as you want. You'd have to pay, of course. There are exploits to reduce the cost but that's another story.

As someone who does that every time and plays the same mage character over and over again, I've NEVER seen that happen to an appreciable degree.

Yeah, you just lose a couple of disposition points and a few faction advances more than makes up for that.

If you join the thieves and fighters guild you'll have a tough time navigating through the quests. I won't spoil it, but there are quite a few conflicting quests between those guilds and you'll have to tread carefully if you want to complete both story lines.

I already mentioned (with a spoiler) the only problem that exists between the fighters and thieves guild, above.
