Jumping NPCs!

Post » Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:01 am

One thing has held me back from enjoying the company of companions in OB and FO3: their inability to access terrain that I can via jumping and how they tend to run off into the blue yonder searching for a path to me. :ahhh:

This is also one of the few areas that modders have had very limited success in adjusting.

Devs please try to implement an NPC jumping system that allows them to reach most terrain features!

Hope is alive until release!

I see a problem for rock campers with the poll... I will add "just jumping companions", which would satisfy me as I like to camp the occasional rock too. :D

I definitely want NPCs to be able to jump/climb over obstacles to attack me.

I'd love them to be able to jump.

On the other hand, there's at least 50 things I want more than jumping NPCs, so I'll deal if they still can't.

I'm indifferent. But sure, why not? I voted yes.

I believe that the NPCs will constantly jump everywhere. That's right, non-stop leaping NPCs!

A high acrobatics stat is the mark of a true man in Skyrim :)

As long as jumping doesn't mean you float through the air for a ridiculous amount of time with your body positioned as if you are about to leap onto someone's back for a piggy-back ride.

Would i like for NPCs to jump? Yes. Will they include that in the game? Probably not.

... You know, sometimes I do hope the devs don't take into account all of these forums ideas.

I saw a... *fireballs dogs* ...mudcrab the other day.*lands near NPC, picks pocket* Filthy creatuuuures. *distant dot in the sunset fires gun screaming yee-hah.*

Well, with the new engine, anything is possible. Of course, it's not THAT big of a deal so I would rather they do other things to the engine to perfect it if they have the time.

Definitely. Although adding all of Morrowind's features would make it very exploitable:

"Oh look! A Khajiit!" *casts spell of 1000 jump on target for 5 seconds*

*hides behind rock*

Not sure why you think jumping NPCs is bad idea... if implemented well it would simply allow them to navigate the world more effectively.

Awww gods, I don't! :P I just thought the concept of bouncing NPCs entertaining. Of course if implemented well it can add to the game. Why can I jump to safety while my attackers can't follow ?

I guess one way to go about this would be to give NPCs some kind of awareness of the terrain. AFAIK, Beth games, and most/all others of equal scope for that matter, do not feature this. I am aware that this sort of thing would likely fall in the realm of AI and that believable/sensible AI seems to be that bane of game developers... mostly because of the time involved vs the payoff.

Perhaps a fully functioning terrain awareness and navigation system is asking too much of near future games... maybe all that we can realistically hope for is that the engine allows for this potential and that someone who has time for a labor of love takes advantage of it. :brokencomputer:

I like my invincible rock. Especially that wall part in the Arena that you can climb up and become invincible.
