I need help remembering the name of a movie...

I always seem to forget the name of this movie, and would like to watch it again. I'm hoping someone here remembers it. It was about this guy who worked for the government to build a time machine. He and a few other people were stuck in a building for (I think) 3 years, until they had successfully created one. Then his memory was erased, and the only hints he had about what he did during those three years were the personal items he was carrying on him. The items he had were clues he left to himself while building the machine, so that he could remember what he did later. The first clue was a fortune cookie fortune who's "Lucky Numbers" were the same as the lottery numbers were the day he was released. I don't remember much else about it, but I know that the poster for the movie had a bunch of puzzle pieces on it with the main character in the background.

If anyone can help remind me of the title it'd be much appreciated. :D

Okay. Now I have one. It's been bugging me for years now, but I've never thought to ask anyone. I think I saw it when I was seven or so.

There's this criminal on the run. For some reason or another he kidnaps a kid. I think he did it by accident, but I can't be sure. They're both on the run, and he teaches the kid some basic ethics (like "You only steal when you need to"). The kid eventually begins to like him, and the crim is actually a pretty nice guy. The film ends with him wounded out in the middle of a field, surrounded by cops. The sheriff or whatever instructs the police sniper only to fire if on his signal and walks out there to negotiate. The crim agrees but reaches into his pocket to get out a postcard to give to the kid, the sniper thinks he's going for a gun and shoots.

The only movie I can think of that has a similar plot is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/ though, the end is not quite the same as your post...
