Okay, so this started when I first bought Oblivion and Morrowind on Steam for that uber-awesome deal they recently had. My machine is an Asus G73SW with Windows 7 Ultimate x64, so I knew I'd be able to run them just fine. However, when I attempted to start them, they kept crashing right before the title menus. Morrowind specficially would pop up with an error along the lines of "Music Error: cannot play file
I decided to do some googling and discovered the existence of "codecs," as apparently other people have had the same problem and have been able to fix this error by using a series of tools to fix the way in which their Windows plays .mp3s. I have literally tried ALL of these tools. I've set it so Windows Media player plays .mp3s, I've used registry fixing tools, I've re-installed both games multiple times, I've cleared all of my codecs using Zoom player, and finally verified my cache files via steam. None of this has worked.
Strangely enough, however, I am able to play both games on my Windows 8 Consumer Build OS perfectly. I have a feeling that I may have installed a program of some sort that is interfering with Morrowind, but I have no idea what it could be. I've uninstalled Quicktime, Daemon Tools, ImgBurn, Alcohol 52%, and pretty much every other player/image recognizing software from my machine, but still nothing (except iTunes).
Please help!
