Mouse-lag with vsync

Post » Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:28 pm

I have now tried everything to make my Oblivion experience a good one. If I use vsync I get mouse-lag, and if I don't I get such a jerky image I just about vomit. Either way makes the game nearly unplayable. Someone on a forum somewhere said that OSR (Oblivion Stutter Remover) fixed his problem by capping the refresh rate at 60Hz, but this didn't help me. I tried Streamline but that didn't do anything at all either. I tried to set maximum pre-rendered frames to 0, 1, 2 and leave it at default 3, but nothing.

Now I'm sick and tired of this, I need to get this to work. I have plenty of computer power, I use Nvidia GTX 285 and a 27" Dell 2709W LCD, which can only be set at 59 or 60Hz.

Help :(

P.S. I don't have any of the above problems in Fallout 3 by the way, which is odd.

Look for the setting:

bbackgroundmouse=?

In your oblivion.ini, located in My Games\Oblivion. Change the setting. (it will be either 1, or 0, switch to the OTHER setting) See if that helps.

Unfortunately it didn't help. I know this is a very common problem, lots of people have issues with this. Thanks for replying though.,

Were you editing the ini file in My Games\Oblivion?

Is there a joystick plugged in as well?

Wireless mouse?

Is there additional software for your mouse running in the background?

What mouse DO you have? :D

Yes of course.

I think the problem is the refresh rate of my monitor, that it can only sync at 60Hz, because if I hook up my old CRT and run it at 180Hz, there's no problem at all. Like I said, Fallout 3 works fine without vsync for some reason, but if I turn on vsync in Fallout 3 it starts to mouse-lag in that game as well. This doesn't happen in all games though, some games I have to use vsync for various reasons, but there's no mouse-lag whatsoever.

I could live with it if only the game were mouse-lagging, but it's in the menu's as well, and Oblivion is inventory-driven and I simply can't hit the buttons with this amount of mouse-lag.

fMouseSensitivity=0.0020
fXenonMenuMousixYMult=0.0003

Those are the only other mouse settings I could find in the ini..... check what your values are, and compare them to mine. My mouse works fine. I run the game on an HP w2207h LCD. Vsync on, refresh rate at 60htz.

It has nothing to do with the refresh rate. My monitor is also 60hz and I don't have problems at all, vsync or no vsync. For that matter, anyone with an LCD monitor will have a refresh rate of 60hz since that's the default for those types. There's something else causing your problem, not just that. Maybe there's something wrong with the monitor itself, or your video card. Have you tried updating your drivers?

It has nothing to do with the refresh rate.

It does, actually. When your CPU/GPU is capable of outputting more frames per second than your monitor is capable of, you'll experience tearing. There are lots of techniques to reduce tearing, but you'll never, ever get rid of it completely. This is the problem I have at the moment, I simply can't use vsync due to the mouse-lag. I was under the impression that OSR could cap the framerate so that tearing does not occur with vsync off, but in my case it doesn't, no matter what settings I use. I have practically given up using vsync, that ship has sailed, it seems.

Have you tried updating your drivers?

I knew I should have put this disclaimer in my first post; yes, my drivers are up to date and they're certainly newer than 2006 anno.

The point that I was trying to make is that your mouse lag is unique to your system and has nothing to do with the refresh rate of your monitor. My monitor is also 60hz, as is the vast majority of players these days because of the move to a standardized refresh rate in LCD monitors. And there normally isn't any issues with mouse lag when using vsync on those monitors. I certainly don't experience any. It kind of sounds like there might be something wrong with the monitor itself if it works fine on your CRT monitor.
