Take all previews of Skyrim with a BIG grain of salt

I'm not sure if I'll be watching any Skyrim previews. I really don't want to get my hopes up again. Ive learn't my lessons when believing anything game devs say. First and foremost it's a business for them and they do anything to get their product sold, take fable for example, was anything that was promised ever in that game?

Woah now that I look back at the demonstration, yeah the shadows are so nice. The final game, you start in prison all lighted up for some reason wich takes away the nice visuals.
In the end Oblivion was a great game, hence all the GoTY awards it won. But I hope Skyrim will be that + the promises.

Bethesda bit off much more than they could chew with Oblivion anyway. Big graphical improvements, scheduled AI, fully voiced dialogue with facial expressions and lip sync, ragdoll and object physics... I think that with Skyrim they'll do much better.

I hope so!

I still remember that video posted in the OP....

Idk..This is just my opinion. But having an engine they are making themselves might change things. I remember someone saying Bethesda didn't have the engine they were working on until a year to 6 months before the game came out. I wouldn't say this gives them a reason to lie, but they didn't really know what they were working with, this time they do.

I'm going to watch all the previews all the time, everyday. I have waited too long for an announcement. I want videos and screen shots that i can fall to sleep looking at. I don't realy care if it's not in the game. The game will still be the most awesome game ever. :intergalactic:

Don't get me wrong, im a fan of the last 2 TES games.. but the way Bethesda hyped up Oblivion and promised the moon, only to deliver a game completely lacking said features, urgh..

Case in point: droning on and on about the 'radiant AI' prior to release.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjbx6-KQoRg

Did _any_ of it make it into the actual game? Just watching that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Theres going to be a year or so of these kind of 'previews' so i sincerely hope they dont go down the same path with Skyrim.

Welcome to this world called "real life" where things don't always go as planned. To your right is imagination land where they do. Feel free to post this topic over there, as it would be much more applicable.

No, the City of Sutch was shown on early maps and definitely wasn't the fort. Also there are a couple of typos that show that Azzan was supposed to be located in the town of Sutch. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Azzan (Info is under Notes.)

I remember that video. I watched all of them & it was a bit of s disappointment the AI in the end. It didn't seem like they knew what they were doing about one hundred percent of the time.

Oh, and the bard from the OP's clip looks/somewhat talks like Will Farrel. He must have done it pro-bono so he could hang with P-Stew.

Really though, I don't think Skyrim will be hyped as much as Oblivion, or at least with info that turns out to be vaporware. As people have said, it's a shorter time from announcement to release. And Beth is not like Lionhead, and Todd is not Peter Molyneaux, consistently claiming that what is in his head will be in his game. At least, I didn't think he was.

I loved Oblivion none-the-less, and I am sure Skyrim will be placed in my safe of favorite games as well. I agree it was a little disheartening to see Radiant AI not included but at least they had a viable reason. If you actually go look into it, it had to be toned down because the more "realistic" they made it, the more often town-wide fights broke out. The only reason it was made like it is now was because they thought it would be kind of a game breaker to have half the town die out every other day. xD Or at least that's what I have come to understand in my time parading around these forums of theirs.

And Fable was horrible with how they handled that all. When Fable2 was coming out, Molyneaux was promising a game that would revolutionize gaming. Then we got Fable 2..... it kind of felt like they joked around a little too much for my taste. Didn't even have 40% of the stuff he claimed would be in the final product and overall was played a few times then forgotten. Fable 3 was definitely a much needed improvement for me, but that's neither here nor there.

So yeah, have faith in them, know they are people like any of us and in the end you should be enjoying a lovely new Bethesda game. Because lets face it, it is rare to find games like the ones they make.

Fable, anyone?

Haha! I remember Peter saying: "When you chop down a tree, a new one will grow out in the coming in-game months. It will be the most deep RPG ever created". Yah, my balls

Couldn't they just have removed the part of the AI that made them do random aggressive things like set things on fire when they made too much noise?

How about you use Fallout 3 as a reference instead? Bethesda is following their Fallout 3 marketing plan much more so than their Oblivion marketing plan. So can you name one feature that was promised before Fallout 3 was released that wasn't in the final game? No? Well then good.

True, I think the devs have smartened up and dropped the Molyneux approach. But I guess we will see how much they try and play up their new engine's capabilities.

I was disapointed that cool stuff didn't make it in Oblivion. They had another 4 years to toy with soft shadows and radiant ai, the consoles are the same so I don't see any reason they don't give us a huge improvement from Oblivion.

Personally when the 'hype' finally does hit the fan, I'd like to see the devs eat a bit of humble pie: "Yeah, we know that travelling across the world map by horse when being relentlessly chased by enemies wasn't fun"; "We acknowledge the AI wasn't all it was cracked-up to be" - "We've identified these as weaknesses and this is how we're going to approach them this time around".

Well, its kind of odd that the first thing that Todd says is that its not scripted at all, so its all kind of misleading, and not representative of the final product?
