Newbie Question for Modders

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 11:18 am

I'm trying to create a custom playable race, and I want to assign things like hair, etc that are currently used by other races. Is there any utility where I can actually see a 3d rendering of what I am trying to assign, or do I just have to do it based on text? I find the creation kit to be quite confusing, and I would prefer not to have to load the entire morrowind file.

I think if you want to see it, you'll have to grit your teeth and use the CS. The FUD factor with using it is greater than the difficulty, really. If you want to make mods, you'll just have to bargain with the devil like the rest of us... :)

A moderator will no doubt come along and move it... New races aren't al that difficult, just tedious, I guess. What you need to do is create a test cell in the CS or use "Ken's Test Hole" a cell in the cell window. Drag a new unique NPC in there, and then you can change its race, heads and hairs and see them on the hoof.

Ah, you can also use nifskope. I've found it much easier to view quickly than the cs. Here's a link: http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope You'll be looking at the meshes, not the body parts, so it might be good to have the cs open to have a quick reference to which bodypart goes to which mesh. Although, I've found that most - if not all - bodyparts are named the same as the meshes, at least in the vanilla game.

I think he's wanting to see what hairs look like on characters, rather than just the mesh. It is one way to go though. I have to say that if tk17's intimidated by the CS, heaven knows what the effect of nifskope will be :)

The first time I opened a nif in nifskope, I had an urge to rip out my hair, gnash my teeth, and bite the family dog...

Looks like I have to buy a dog, now, before I open nifskope for the first time. oyyyyy. lol

Hey tk... you could also drag and drop the heads and hair from body parts into a cell that you use just for displaying the parts. In theory, you could make a showcase of all the heads right there in a room in CS.
