A hanging NPC

Post » Mon Dec 28, 2009 5:35 am

Hi. Strange one for you.

I have need of an NPC (or something that looks like an NPC) to be hanging in the same way as the bodies are hanging in the Oblivion towers. I don't need the huge rope, just a way to make an NPC appear to be hanging in place. Can this be done?

Cheers

Don't remember 100%, but I think there's a hanged corpse related to a Dark Brotherhood quest (Do not want to spoil it), or used in Necromancer lairs? Sorry I can't be of further help.

Something like this really requires a fairly high level of 3d modeling skill and ability to make animations if you want this NPC to look like an NPC and not some corpse. The reason being that NPCs typically have to always be standing on something (even if its a collision box) and would not look right when bound with a rope unless some rather complicated arrangement was setup.

If you have a skilled animator on the payroll, you could probably achieve the desired effect by creating a roped clothing mesh which is weighted to the skeleton with the arm and hand portions weighted to the body (so they are stuck to the sides of the NPC). Then combine that with an idle animation, based off the sitting animation in terms of node setup, where their legs are beneath them dangling. Then setup an invisible chair, with a rope leading to it from the ceiling above that the NPC will be sitting on that is linked to the animation. Combine it with scripting and packaging to force the actor to the position, as well as scripting to break the bonds and swap out the clothing, and you'll have something to work with.

If you don't, you might want to consider a less problematic situation of a sitting hostage. While it might not have the effect you're looking for, it doesn't require special components to be made.

Krovosos: Ill take a look cheers.

Vagrant0: I kind of figured it would end up like that. If Krovosos is right and there is a model available that would fit the bill Ill go for it, but I'm not going to start modeling and animating just for scenery. The NPC isn't a hostage, he's supposed to be dead and hanging there, but rather than the mashed up corpses that can be found in the Oblivion planes, I wanted to have something that looked like a normal NPC; the mashed corpses are a little OTT for the location.

Anyway, Cheers

Guess you might be out of luck then; I remember the hanged-corpses as using the Zombie Mesh ("Mashed Up"). If you want to use an actual NPC, then that's going to be more tricky as Vagrant0 has explained.
Best of luck on your mod.

I've also got one with Glass armor and a sword through him that I made for someone awhile back if you'd like it PM me and I'll send you the NIf - http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/Armor%20Displays/dead.jpg - or if you need something more specific send me details and I'll see what I can put together for you - If the one Ghogiel linked doesn't suffice !

Thanks guys - It looks that Ghogiel' link might be the kind of thing I'm looking for; I can certainly change a few things to allow for a gallows! I'm not 100% sure about adding models to my mod, but no doubt it will be easy enough.....

JDFan: I'll have a look at the model that Ghogiel linked to thanks. The guy with the sword is good, but I'm really looking to hang the devil, preferably by the neck. The gallows is kind of an added bonus (and gets rid of the tree!) so Ill see how that fits in. Thanks for the offer, although it seems an awful lot of work just for something that is scenery!

No problem - it actually is a pretty good Nif that Phitt made (the swinging animation is a pretty good touch) - If it doesn't work for your purpose PM me with some details of what you need and I'll see what I can do (ie. if you need the NPC in some other type of clothing\armor).

Thanks JDFan, and thanks to Ghogiel for the link (and Phitt for the mesh!). The gallows was not what I first intended but it ended up working out better than I planned.

Cheers all
