Even a tiny scratch can be enough to make a disc useless. CRC errors quite often mean the disc is fubar, but I've had some success with creating an image of the disc to my hard drive and installing from there.

can you tell me how to go about making an image of the disk and reading it from my hard drive, and is there some sort of programmed involved to do this, or what? just need a lil more info

Explore the disk (right click on E: driver in My Computer). See if you can run set up from there.

What letter depends on the computer, for example (one) of my disc drives is lettered "J"

In any event, this thread reeks of necromancy.

IMGBurn can make an image of a disc so long as there is no copy protection stopping it (examples of copy protection would be CSS, SecuROM, SafeDisc, etc). If there is copy protection protecting it, IMGBurn will not copy it as it is a violation of the DMCA to bypass copy protection and as such discussion of how to bypass forms of copy protection are prohibited by the forum rules.

There are two ways. One is to polish the disk to get the scratch out. This does not always work.

Another way would be to use Future Floor Polish. Apply it to the disk with a small paint brush like for models. Don't worry about brush marks. However you need to let the Future cure for 48 hours before you put the disk in the drive. It maybe good to go after 24, but better to wait. If you try to use it sooner, then the future may very well fly off the disk.

However, if you registered the game, then you can get a replacement disk for a small fee from Bethesda. Or, you can just buy the GOTY version of the game for cheap now a days. The Original Game Disk cost about $10 now.

Not here. Please don't raise threads from the dead for unrelated questions.
