Can't find a rhyme or reason for it at all, usually it starts with a black screen which then progresses to a full game crash, I do get a pop-up telling me my graphic card driver has stopped responding but I've tried reformatting, installing at least 10 different drivers from Nvidia.

It does this on both Fallout 3 and Oblivion, actually, and varies with driver versions, older ones tend to BSOD instead of just crashing the program like newer ones, but none of them have actually stopped it as of yet.

The card also came overclocked, I've tried reverting it down a little as well and that didn't help either.

This is pretty much my last attempt to fix this before I just go buy a new card, so any help would be appreciated.

Get the 186.18 version of the nvidia drivers, download and install http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/other_tools/driver_cleaner_pro.cfm.

Go to the add/remove hardware app in your control panel, and uninstall your video card.

Reboot into safe mode. (tap the F8 key while your computer is booting up, BEFORE windows actually starts)

In safe mode, run driver cleaner, and have it remove all your nvidia video drivers. I don't know what system board you have, but, be aware, nvidia also make mobo chipsets, do NOT remove the drivers for those.

reboot again, and let vista start normally, when the new hardware wizard comes up, cancel it. (if you even get that option.....)

Run the installer for the 186 drivers you downloaded earlier. Do what it tells ya to.

The system will probably want to reboot as the last step. When the system comes back up, try the game again.

Are you running any mods?
What are your save habits like? Are you using auto/quick saves?
What power supply do you have in your machine? Is it adequate for you video card?

No mods at all, just reinstalled and it does it with pre-patch vanilla, post-patch vanilla, SI.

Don't even get to save, most of the time this will crash mid character creation, sometimes I make it a third of the way through the tutorial dungeon, if I port myself out of there with the console it will eventually do it out and about as well.

Power supply is a 750w Corsair and is adequate, as far as I know.

I'd also like to mention that this only happens with Fallout 3 and Oblivion, don't believe it to be hardware related because I can run more demanding games like GTA4 near max and nothing goes wrong, only seems to have problems with these two games.

And I'll try the driver thing, but note I did say I've reformatted this and entirely wiped the drivers several times and then installed new ones or old ones which end up crashing all the same, and only with these two games.

Power supply is most certainly 'adequate'. :D

Beth games seem to have some issues with newer versions of the nvidia drivers. (notably, anything in the 19X series) The uninstaller for the drivers are not always the best either, they tend to leave stuff behind, that can still cause problems. The 186.18 drivers are 'known good' in this instance. Doing the clean install of good drivers should eliminate those as a factor. Should......

Where do you have the game installed to? If you used the default path, that may also be a bit of a problem. Try uninstalling the game, and installing it someplace like C:\Games\Oblivion. Install the full game, and if you do NOT have GOTY, get the latest patch as well.

You could also try a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796, but, as you did a format/reinstall of the O/S, I don't think that is going to make much difference, but, it never hurts to try.

It's all patched up, it IS installed in program files but isn't that only a problem if you run Vista's UAC garbage? I don't and haven't had any problems otherwise with stuff installed there.

Anyway I'm downloading the driver now and I'll post back with results once I wipe the old one and install it.

If you have UAC turned off, install path should be less of an issue.

If it is just a crash, try installing the klite basic codec pack. Be sure to set it to repair broken codecs on install.

If it is a blue screen, please post the stop code, and the error message, and, if applicable, the file associated.

Just a crash, no bluescreen, sorry I didn't specify.

Never heard of that codec pack thing, where would I get that?

That would be http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. I would use the Basic or Standard pack, the less codecs you have the better.

Well I tried the basic codec pack, still crashes.

And that's an appcrash again, not a BSOD, any other ideas?

Try navigating to your oblivion folder, find the oblivion.exe, right click on it, select properties, (or personalize, whatever...) and set it to run in XP compatibility mode, and also, somewhere, there should be an option to run as admin, enable that one too. Try the game again.

Gave that a shot, same result.

Not giving up on trying to solve the issue yet, but, does anyone have a suggestion as to which card to look into for an upgrade from my current GeForce GTX 285?

If I can't sort this out on the software side it'd be nice to have an alternative option that won't crash on me non-stop.

Go with one of the ATI cards, 5870 would be good.........

Well no need to buy a new card, I finally got it to stop crashing by underclocking the card even more, came standard at 694mhz and I have it down to 630, doesn't crash.

Thanks for throwing me suggestions though it could have been anything after all, much obliged.
