That's your Pip-Boy 3000 personal computing device. It's basically an iPhone stuck to your arm. It's how you access the game menus, so no, you can't take them off.

It is a Pip-Boy 3000. You can take it off or replace with it, *drum roll*, mods!

They're pip boys, think of them as PDAs. They tell you character information, store holotapes and quest information, have maps and a targetting assist system.

They also seem to have geigher counters that don't seem to work unless you're in a high radiation area.

Though I think PuffyPuff (god, I feel like a sissy just typing that) is a 360 player

Do other char's have them?
besides it would kinda weird wearing one in a sundress or something
Oh and why are all the outfits and hairstyles so retro?
I thought the game was like in 2270 or something
Not 1970(or what ever time people dressed so retro in spring dresses and sweater vests)

Other characters do have them, usually only other vault dwellers though. Most wastelanders don't have access to such coveted technology. Not even the ones who are obsessed with technology...

The world is set in what is described as a "retrofuturistic world" Y'know all those old sci fi shows from the 50s where everyone has silver spacesuits and rayguns, but they still wear old fashioned hair, listen to 50s music and drive very odd looking hovercars? That's the style we're talking about. Like the styles of the 1950s never went out of fashion.

How much did you read up on this game before getting it?

S/he hasn't got it yet, that's why s/he is asking about it.

Because when you like the look of some armour, say any of the Power Armours... it looks rank with a skinny wristed Pip-Boy showing.

I use the mod to remove it, and also downloaded a basic head lamp mod for the power armour. If the head lamp mod was a bit better it would rock the casbah, but the light tends to remain behind when my character moves heh. Good for checking things whilst stationary though, and it looks cool. Also with the removed Pip-Boy mod you can't hold the button to activate the light, have to assign a different key for the light. But again, it looks cool wearing PA without a Pip-Boy. ^_^

That "Ugly Robot Thing" is what keeps you alive, It shows your health, Shows if you're taking in Radiation and allows you to equip items, Store them and freeze time.

If the questions you are asking are your main concern about games, this may not be the game for you.. It is an excellent game with TONS to do, but it sounds like JRPG's may better suit your taste in fashion

PuffyPuff has a thread in Oblivion forum as well, and the two games are virtually identical in gameplay.

EDIT: well, similar enough to enjoy one after playing the other anyway.
