A fallout MMO

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:58 am

As a fan of the old series, I can't help but be overwhelmed with curiosity. The series definitely has the infrastructure to support an MMO, it's just upto the player and the community to provide the RPG immersion. I doubt there would be 500k+ congregated at any one location at any one time, but maybe I'm just naive. If there was an emphasis on a great expansive wasteland then the population could easily be more scattered, I honestly don't know. But more than anything I am curious at this point. In my opinion it has potential, at the very least.

Using instancing, population can easily be controlled in each zone. There would need to be an mechanic to switch instances so you could be with firends, but for something loke Fallout, a menu command would do fine.

Considering the general murderous reaction at NMA to any way, shape or form of Fallout MMO, I'm going to disagree with you. Heck, untill the IPLAY project was announced, no one was even allowed to mention a Fallout MMO over there.

I'll also stand by my argument that MMOs tend to shallower character mechanics, and MMOs tend to simplify combat mechanics, AND, MMOs tend to feature systems that award player skill over stats, itemization over characterizaztion, and collective play over solo play, at least in terms of end game, and also tend to contain PVP elements.

And I stand by my prediction that IPLAY will be going for the gold on this, which means a mainstream type game.

I agree that no MMO will approach a single player RPG. Yet, we have several posters around here who just can't help themselves turning just about every thread negative.

So, I add these point sup and come to a conclusion that seems rather solid to me: Traditonal Fallout fans will not be pleased with ANY Fallout MMO, and many of them will not even consider playing ANY MMO, Fallout or no.

Save this post. Lets see if I am correct.

And there we see the broad brush with which you paint. Heh, amazing when you see the intent behind words, eh ? So not only will those NMA baddies not bother with a Fallout MMO, they'd all reject any MMORPG ? Hm.

Any setting does.

You wan a example?

We start on a Vault like every other player that is the game starting area, then we "leave the vault" to the outside the Vault area were the Vault is using the G.E.C.K. and then we move on to more difficult areas.

Quests are easy, from "end radroach infestation on the Reactor sublevel 03" to "fix the Mr. Handy on the hydroponics room 01".

Doing a MMO is not hard, especially when there is already a existing world but making a MMO that works is much harder.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Are we in agreement, or what? :P Whatever the case, I think you somewhat proved my point, albeit to my confusion..:P

Unfortunately all MMO's end up being the same thing.

Level 1 quest....go kill a large number of these mobs until you reach level 2

Level 2 quest go kill a number of these mobs until you're level 3

Level 3 Quest......see where I'm going?

OH, and add OOC talk in the trade channel and Old Tired Chuck Norris Jokes, and
there will be a new fad of "Protectotron Movies" along with the general rudeness
and LFG Spam

Add Water......Instant MMO :P

Sorry I'm so Cynical but I've tried a bunch of MMO's and they all boil down to the above.
SWG Pre NGE had the best Community because there was an active economy,
but there was absolutely nothing to do except take missions to kill 20 space bunnies

You can make a MMO from about any setting, the issue comes from the mechanics and what is going to be done ...

Look at Star Trek Online, some idiots at Perpetual Entertainment thought Trekkers watched the show for the space battles and so made it a MMORTS and I am not sure the new approach is going to work (news flash [censored] developers, NO trekkie worth the name was watching it for the action) and I think its going to flop because they simply do not get it.

Fallout at least have the advantage of being a game and so existing mechanics that can be applied but still if anything the Internet have proven to me is there is no intelligent life on Earth, there are enough morons that think doing a paying "counter-strike" version is the way to go.

Well for better or for worse, Interplay have no other choice as far as Fallout developing goes, it's the only license they still hold. I'm sure if it was upto them, an MMO wouldn't be on the horizon (Van Buren being the best example of the direction they wanted to take). But they have no other option. I know I'm naive, the only knowledge I have of MMO is Southpark's "Make Love, Not Warcraft" episode :P All I know is, given Interplay's position, they wouldn't focus their efforts on such a Project if it was as high risk as people are making out, surely?

Interplay is dead, it have been dead for a long while ... it just a corpse that stinks a lot since its not buried yet.

In April 2007, SEC filings were made showing the transfer of the IP for the Fallout MMOG to Fallout 3 developer Bethesda for US$5.75 million. While Bethesda now owns the rights to the Fallout MMOG IP, clauses in the purchase agreement state allow Interplay to license the rights to the development of the MMOG, provided that development begins within 24 months of the date of the agreement (which was 4 April 2007), and that Interplay must secure $30 million within that time frame or forfeit its rights to license. Interplay must furthermore launch the MMOG within four years of the beginning of development, and pay Bethesda 12 percent of sales and subscription fees for the use of the IP.

Next month we see what there is of a Fallout MMOG, either way its gamesas running the show now and considering how Herve Caen sunk Interplay (granted, going into public trading was stupid but at that time ... most companies did) I serious doubt that when the 4th of April comes they will have anything to show and even if it does, I pretty much guess they will screw it up but making it a MMOFPS or something equal disastrous.

Except Interplay isn't dead...Although that response brings to light your disdain for this MMO, simply because it's fronted by Interplay? How about this, Bethesda would never have a Fallout franchise if it wasn't for Interplay, so chew on that for a while.

We will indeed see in 21 days at the latest. You seem to have a very fervent passion for Bethesda, and you're welcome to it. Personally I would like to see one last shot at Fallout from Interplay, even if that is in the form of an MMO, and if it fails, it fails. I'll have no animosity either way. And maybe then you can lose that chip on your shoulder.

My concern is whether or not they can produce the desolate, desperate feel of Fallout with an MMO. Don't get me wrong, I have very high hopes, but I've chosen to temper them with the fact that MMOs are not the type of game that lends itself to this sort of sparsly populated, hard scabbled environment.

If you've ever been on a WOW server you know that major cities have so many players in one spot, you can't even see the ground, and important quest areas are swarming with players as well. I certainly hope they can work their way around these thematic problems, but I have my doubts.

Well, Interplay has 21 days to come up with the money, and I don't see it happening. Hopefully then the world will at last be rid of Herve Caen, the idiot who screwed the pooch by scuttling the original F3 (and FT2 also), and dragged one of the greatest game companies ever down into oblivion (no pun intended). Don't get me wrong, I played many, many Interplay games over the years and enjoyed them very much. But they won't be coming back from the dead, and it's long past time to bury the corpse..

I hear you there, back in the day if the box had the Interplay Logo on it, I bought it,
without even reading what the game was about, I did the same with all the Bullfrog games too
