Daggerfall Class Editor

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:35 am

There was one out there called Dagclass.exe. I have a copy which I can't get to run in either XP or Dosbox. Perhaps there is some tweak that would make it work. Maybe it's corrupt.

Anyone have that program working? Or know of any other ways to edit to pre-made classes?

I doubt that anyone has gone to great lengths to modify that program. I must admit that I never saw much point in the program. The only class aspects that can't be "modified" by creating a similar custom class with the changes that you want are the starting spells. And since spells are easy to create, the only point would be to have a different set during the first dungeon (although the chance to abuse that might be tempting). Just my 2 cents....

It's useful as a modding tool. I don't know of any other way to mod the classes. I am assuming that mods like Pirates of Tamriel etc were made using it.

I've been toying with the idea of a DF mod for years. Now I have more time available to do it, unfortunately a lot of the tools have been lost. :(

Expand some factions, add a faction or two, add more story arcs, more quests, add a town/city or so. Change around the standard classes to make them more difficult to play against. Redo and edit some dialogue and writing type stuff.

These things have been done so I know they are possible. I'd like to create a dungeon but I'm not sure if it's possible at all, but even if it is it's probably too hard to visualize without a dungeon editor. Nothing with graphics or sound.

I still have nearly all the tools, mods, files that came out during the good ol' Daggerfall days. So I still have Dagclass as well and it works perfectly under XP... Here is the list of files it relies upon:

user32.dll
gdi32.dll
kernel32.dll
comdlg.dll
winspool.drv
advapi.dll

All of these are components of a standard Windows XP installation... All you have to do when you launch the program is to open one of the CLASSXX.CFG files which are located in the ARENA2 Daggerfall folder.

Opening this tool rembered me some kind of nostalgia of the m0use.net network and all of the great Elder Scrolls websites that existed at that time. The only one who survived is The UESP...

I also had a site on m0use net but I didn't get very far with it. But of course, it had vision ;)

I guess I only found a corrupt version then. Could you post all that stuff somewhere? That would be... fantastic :D

BTW, how do you find out what files an application relies upon?

Here it is: http://rapidshare.com/files/82583535/dagclass.zip.html :)

To find out what files an application relies upon, you can open it in http://www.dependencywalker.com/. It's a fantastic tool, yet very simple. :)

Thanks! Works fine in XP. My copy was missing about a byte...

Now, what other lost tools do you have stashed away? :) Any of the latest Don Tipton stuff?

I have some of Donald Tipton stuff, I was even in contact with him a long time ago, before he closed his website for an unknown reason. But I don't have any stuff not already present on Andux's Daggerfall Studio. Other files I collected through years include most of the UESP Daggerfall files which are still availaible on this webiste, some long forgotten files from the Essential Site, and my own Daggerfall programs which were not widely known in the past, like DagRep (a graphical reputation editor, which is the only one able to edit the legal rep). I could post some of these somewhere, but I have first to check which one is not available on the web anymore.

Tipton closed his site because some guy called Paul Szczepanek (sp?) said something rather frustrating to him. I could not contact him after that.
I have a lot of his tools, but they aren't the latest versions etc, I'm still looking for them.

Yea, anything that isn't up elsewhere would be great, but even if it is it doesn't hurt to have them up somewhere else too.

You know, a lot of people would really love a graphical reputation editor, especially one able to edit legal reputation. ^_-

It would be great to have anything you can put up!

Thanks :)

I read somewhere that it was for that reason that Tipton closed his website but couldn't believe it really was for that kind of reason... But hey, people have the right to have a more or less strong ego and do such things, it is not my intention to judge them... Anyway, it was a great loss for the Daggerfall community.

I will see if my rep editor still works under XP. It was made in Visual Basic 6.0 under Windows 98, and I didn't take a look at the code for a very very long time. Maybe I could port it to Visual C++ 2005/Qt 4.3 in one week, I will check if it is worth to do it.

Yea, I found it a bit hard to believe when it happened, and was annoyed that I didn't have everything of his downloaded to the up to the minute version... The download pages on his website even said "closed due to Paul S." or similar after the event.

Thanks for the effort. Although nobody else has posted in this thread, maybe that is because they assume we're still discussing the class editor. I am sure others would be interested in the tools and the rep editor.

I know it's a longshot, but don't suppose you got any of the source to Tipton's utilities did you?

So, I have source for ATLAS and THAW. I'm not a programmer, most of this stuff makes no sense to me. I just want to use the tools. There is some stuff for werefall but I don't know if that would count as "source" exactly. I think the ROCHAY source is in the werefall pack.

I hope people can fill in some of those blanks. I keep hoping Tipton will turn up and upload everything again. Are there any other web forum type places where DF hackers hang out?

I know the topic is a bit old but can someone please explain my involvement in all this. The last time I was really active on this forum was year bloody 2000 before we moved forums. Apperently I've been rude to someone I don't know and have no recollection of it. I hope it's just a mixup or some other Paul Szczepanek as I don't remember doing anything worng. I was part of FReD (and if you don't know what that is then it doesn't matter) and I know that poeple are still working on one of its reincarnations (unfortunetly I have moved on and haven't got the time to spare) and I still host some DF remade music on my website and it's 2008 for god's sake. I really don't like the idea of being villyfied for no good reason.

Seems that nobody knows the real story (or really cares, either), so I wouldn't worry. Besides, if Tripton ditched his site over some comment from one person, the fault is his. Lame thing to get all huffy about, especially huffy enough to close a site that was apparently quite helpful to others. But since we don't know the story, well, what can we say?

But while I'm here, might as well respond to an old post:
I doubt that anyone has gone to great lengths to modify that program. I must admit that I never saw much point in the program. The only class aspects that can't be "modified" by creating a similar custom class with the changes that you want are the starting spells. And since spells are easy to create, the only point would be to have a different set during the first dungeon (although the chance to abuse that might be tempting). Just my 2 cents....

Since the human enemies use the canned classes, editing those classes is an effective way to editing those enemies. Does the Overlord from Andyfall ring a bell? ;)
