Hand to Hand in Skyrim?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:10 pm

I want Hand to Hand to have weapons or at least have the gloves deal damage and magical effects like weapons. Actually that would be preferable, I used Hand to Hand in Oblivion due to lack of Skull Crusher. Until Shivering Isles showed up with Nerveshatter there were no acceptable hammers to replace Skull Crusher. Nerveshatter barley was an acceptable replacement to Skull Crusher. Give me Skull Crusher or give me magical fists!... or both :P

I agree that unarmed combat will always be less practical than weaponized combat, but realism isn't necessarilly the point of a video game, its about enjoyment, so for the sake of the game they could make H2H on par with Blade, Blunt, and other forms of combat. .

you have a good point about realism/enjoyment. however I take a great deal of enjoyment in making decisions that have consequences later. making H2H = swords = axes makes an apparent choice between 123 into a choice between 1, 1 or 1. having 2 fighting skills would mean you can develop 1 skill a lot or divide your focus for versatility. what ever the end decision is about H2H I will be happy with as long as it presents a real choice and not the illusion of a choice.

Also I think improved swordplay involving things besides the sword would still be incorporated in the weapon skill for swords, because that includes all elements of fighting with that weapon, not just the weapon itself.

H2H should only be used for fighting without a weapon,

This is true. Except, then shouldn't blocking without a shield be considered a weapon skill and not a blocking skill. and even acrobatics and athletics, because dodging the enemy could be considered swordplay. I don't mean to split hairs.

I can't see why it should be cut. It should be improved and made somehow more practical.

Add some kicking animation (and probably bottom as the target) plus an equipment slot for feet, PLUS knuckles/gloves/gauntlets/boots and we're golden.

Seriously, I need some more kicks, and change it to Martial Arts instead of Hand to Hand. You're more likely going Hand to Sword or Hand to Magic or Hand to Paw (bears) rather than Hand to Hand. If you DO get to Hand to Hand, you're probably fighting something not worth fighting

I think grappling is much more important. I mean, how many mead hall bar brawls look like refereed kickboxing matches? You choke the guy and then get in a good punch, essentially wrestling in between holds, knees, and punches.

I hope that HtH can be used while you have another weapon equipped (not punches, but kicks or headbutts or whatever). Some throws and grapples would be nice too. Ideal would be Arkham Asylum, but that was the entire game, not just one skill.

Yeah but the complexity of adding different grapples for each possible creature that you can face would be too much, while for striking you only need different animations for the PC. And they would look a lot cooler than grapples I think, (unless you include stuff like suplexes or piledrivers :P)

I hope that you can kick as well. It would be awesome having a sword fight and then kicking the opponent.

Yeah they should definitely add kicking and maybe even tail swipes, bites and clawing for the beast races.

I would love to see a revamp to the hand to hand combat system in Skyrim. Kicks, jabs, tackles, and even a martial arts flare would add to the interaction, experience and the intensity. Overall, I would like for all the combat styles to get a more intense make-over to really get the player involved in the action.

I really don't want to see eastern martial arts in Skyrim (home of the Nords, you may recall). On the other hand, I do think that the Bethesda developers should play Chronicles of Riddike: Escape From Butcher Bay and take notes. That game has the only boxing style combat that I've enjoyed since playing the original Punch Out.

I think if they include the Akaviri in the game then there should definitely be eastern martial arts, and even if not I think eastern based martial arts would still be interesting, I wouldn't want all of them based on eastern forms, just a couple. There would definitely be ways to implement them, even though it doesn't really fit the culture of Skyrim, there could be one trainer who had been to the Akaviri lands and can teach it to the PC.

I think the idea of being able to disarm opponents sounds like an idea, and if you're in unarmed combat you can use counters against your oppenent. I love my hand to hand combat :D Taking idea's from martial arts isnt a bad thought either! Jujitsu is a well rounded martial art in my opinion.

That would be sweet if it was in the same style as condemned 2 - You could do 3 different types of kicks in it - so if they made that for different martial arts
it would be a different style of kick or punch.

I would like more h2h but I want it karate/judo/jujitsu style without weapons, then I could play as a monk or priest type and still be role playing no ninja crap, and no hand weapons for h2h because then they wont spend enough time making the damage increases for a pure h2h'r it'll become more about the weapon so I might as well go assassin or thief or mage type with a helpful fallback.

I want HtH improved but I do not want fist weapons. Once you add fist weapons you effectively remove HtH it is just another form of weapon based combat and going HtH would be stupidly inefficient in comparison. It may be realistic or whatever but it isn't fun.

I've never seen hand to hand look good in any RPG, it mostly ends up looking like some weirdly animated scuffle.

The only decent hand to hand I've seen was in other games, and in those it always locked you into some kind of fight mode.

I don't see much point in a fleshed out hand to hand anyway. In just about every game I've seen with the option, you've used hand to hand at the beginning only to give it up for a sword, or gun, or what have you. Wasted disc space I say.

What's the point anyway, since the average joe in Skyrim will probably attack you with something much heavier than a fist.

I think unarmed combat really needs revamping. Using unarmed over blade/blunt in OB got very boring very quickly. The inclusion of kicks, throws etc surely wouldn't be too difficult (am I being naive here?). A sfor hand weapons, spiked gloves/gauntlets, bladed gauntlets etc plenty of options there.

The point is ever since 1st edition Ad&D(or did the mystic appear first in basic D&D?) there has been a monk class in fantasy gaming. Not every game picked it up, but the elder scrolls did. And unarmed combat is the primary component to the monk class.

Yeah I know about the monk class, but personally I never found it to be very believable.

I mean if I've got a claymore, I dont care how good his hand armor is it's not going to be doing very well when I make contact.

I think that improving the H2H skill is a necessity. I don't particularly want hand weapons, but if they are added (as I'm sure they will be because a certain recent post-apocalyptic game has them) then that will be all right. HOWEVER! I want improved animations and counters. Counters could be simple enough to implement. Most games base counters on timing your enemies' moves, and tapping a given button (generally the attack button) while you stand in a defensive mode (ala fighter games, and the Assassin's Creed franchise). Someone recently mentioned Katars? This would be a cool weapon to counter with. Time your enemies' blows with a quick jab of the katar into their jugular... though this weapon would probably more end up nearly decapitating someone, than puncturing a vital vein. Anyways, you get the picture. Or how about this, make finisher moves as counters - not with just H2H, but with everything! Okay, getting off subject. I have been disappointed with the Hand to Hand skill. I mean, they streamlined the game to NOT include things like crossbows, spears, and levitation (though I more understand no levitation because of the "non" open cities than the others) because they were quote/unquote USELESS/NEVER USED, and they put in something as worthless as Hand to Hand into a game that has been optimized for the best possible playing experience. I LIKE MY FISTS! THEY BEAT THE [cen-SH-so-IT-red] OUT OF BAD GUYS! And seeing something as rediculous as the fist fighting in OB was just that... REDICULOUS! But whatever, I suppose. Cest la vie, and all that mumbo-jumbo. I am psyching myself up for nothing. I am honestly expecting the H2H to svck just as badly - if not moreso - than OB's.

Id like to see hand to hand be applied as an addition to weapons. For example, I lock sabers with a guy, I'd love to punch him in the throat or something to push him back then put my blade through his neck.

I agree that it is definitely underpowered, and even if it doesn't become on par with other weapon skills, I hope the appeal to it is much greater, and it isn't as underpowered as Oblivion.

But the least that can be done is to get rid of the horrible impractical power attacks they have, a two handed strike and spins with fists is definitely impractical, and it doesnt even look cool lol.

Yeah, the power attacks where pretty bad. The spinning hang of death could have easily been replaced with something like a round house kick, infact, all of the power attacks would have been more logical as kicking attacks.

What type of hand to hand weapons do you guys think could be added.
A http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katara_(dagger) of course would be cool
Also the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Scissor would be a nice addition.

Katars are awesome, but lets not forget http://thedarkblade.com/wp-content/uploads/Tekkokagi.JPG

Im not really to concerned about figting styles/weapons. As long as the h2h animations are alot better.

EDIT: Although, with H2H, it would be awesome to be able to redirect and counter attacks, being able to disarm people or counter their attack ending with them impaled on their own sword etc. Would definately make H2H more viable against armed opponents.
