Scripting a Puzzle

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:28 am

jeeze, these forums are really not as active as any of the other Oblivion ones are they? I was going to wait for my previous post to sink past the first page before posting again, but it's taking a little while.

Oh well, people will just have to deal with two Ntom posts floating around, it's not going to kill anyone, so i think everything will be okay. Anyways, I just recently remembered there was a mod I use to work on that fortunately I was able to save before wiping my comp...well...accidentally saved it. I uploaded a "beta" version of it on tesnexus and I just redownloaded it. I think, instead of working on the merchant (which I will work on afterwards) I would like to first finish this mod.

There is a puzzle I made...or want to make...that requires a bit of scripting, and I honestly have no idea how to script, and I have tried learning but I felt like I was trying to read a different language, rather than english explaining to me how to script.
So I was wondering if anyone would mind offering a hand on how to script this puzzle. I will record a bit of a video showing exactly how I want it to happen if you want to have a little more detail.

thank you :)
I am rendering the file now and will upload it to youtube along with a description of how the puzzle should go about. Come check back in an hour or so for an edit that I will make to this post with the link.

EDIT:

I have to adjust a few things in the ESP file before uploading it, so feel free to view this video and read over the instruction (on the video's page) to understand what I am goign for, and you can ask any questions, then, by the time you have watched, replied, and so forth, I probably will have the esp file ready for you to poke around with (if you so want to)

I tried making my description of how I wanted it to go as clear as possible, but if it doesn't make sense at any point, let me know.

EDIT:
.esp download:

(alternatively)

(both essentially take you to the same place)

I like the concept. :D

I would set it up as a quest, (that never updates your journal...) and have the individual stages as separate scripts. Reference A would set the quest stage to 10. A script on gate A would be checking for quest stage, and if it was 10, or greater, open the gate, and update the quest stage. Gate B would have its own little script, and when the quest stage was say, 20, or greater, it would unlock. and so on and so forth.

This looks eminently doable.

its great that it is doable (and sounds at the more easy end of scripting) but my knowledge of scripting is smaller than this period.

EDIT:
Er...well this is a bit much of me to ask, so I apologize in advance, but it never hurts to ask, so I was curious if you would mind setting up the script for me? or atleast set up the first gate, and script the book to give the spell, so I can have a general outline to follow.
if you can't, I suppose I can take a crack at scripting...thoguh the end result might not be good.

I can probably manage something for ya. You may have to fill in a couple blanks though. (specific references to objects) I have another short script I am working on at the moment, so, let me get that one done up, and I can get something together for ya.

omg! that's awesome! thank you very much!!!!
Take your time, honestly, I am procrastinating a bit on that mod anyways, ha ha ha...I had the "beta" of it up August '09 and then complications occured and I couldn't play my oblivon until about a week ago...and then when I went to TESNexus last night, I remembered I had one of my mods up that was still somewhat complete, so I decided I would download it again and finish it, because I had a few intrested (though they have probably long since forgotten it) so I decided I should get to work. But take your time, I can wait awhile =)
I just downloaded 4 "epic" dungeon quest mods that will fill my time anyways. I still have to make my way through Malevolant as well (and I have to say, thus far it has been amazing...just wish I could take the [censored] armor off)
