Help me?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:14 am

I deleted the folder with all my oblivion stuff on it via recycle bin and now I need to reinstall it but its acting as if its already installed, I.e. when i put in the disc the launcher is popping up, but when i hit play it says the executable can't be found, reinstall it. if i hit uninstall, it says it can't find the uninstall program, "run the setup.exe file on the oblivion install disc to uninstall". It's the GOTY Edition if that makes any difference, and the only other disc is the expansions. I was told by a friend it was probably a registry issue so i downloaded a windows registry cleanup tool, but it didnt take care of the issue. Please help >.<

Ok, bit of a forewarning here first.

Using the registry editor is not something to be undertaken lightly. You have every opportunity to totally hose your system with a simple slip of the finger, so, BE CAREFUL.

So, that said, open the registry editor by typing "Regedit" in the Run box, or search box, on Vista/Win7, from the start button.

do a search for bethesda softworks. It should find a folder for you, that has entries for all beth games you have installed. Highlight the Oblivion section, and simply delete it. Reboot, try the install again.

I did as you suggested and deleted it all and rebooted. after the reboot I did a search to make sure it was all gone and it was. I put in the disk and it did the exact same thing as before, and I went to look in regedit and now the oblivion launcher was back in the registry.

I think I know what your problem is, because it looks similar to an http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1134570-morrowind-options-and-play-wont-work/page__view__findpost__p__16616928 that another member needed some assistance with. :user:

Please note that solution was working for MW-GOTY, so I'm not sure if that could work for you but you can a least give it a try.
Just follow the instructions and good luck. :)

Already used a similar registry cleaner before I even started this thread. Then I used the RegEdit tool built into my PC per the other guy's suggestion.
My launcher is coming up under the assumption the game is installed, however, it is not. If I hit play, it says the .exe file isnt found, which it shouldnt be due to me deleting it. It suggests reinstalling. Well when i hit uninstall, it says, it can't find the uninstall program, and suggests, and I quote "run the setup.exe file on the oblivion install disc to uninstall". There are 2 discs in the Goty edition, 1 causes this launcher to come up, and the other installs SI & Kot9

Do you have http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-cleaner/download/ install on your computer?

If not install it again and launch it. Once it's up you will notice tree options just select the second (Start Advanced Registry Scan) one.

Click next to search for any registry error there is in Windows and fix those error. Reboot your PC.

After the reboot try to install Oblivion again and good luck. :)

I checked out that link, and have already done all that, there is no trace of anything with the words oblivion, or bethesda softworks ANYWHERE on my PC. The file "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{35CB6715-41F8-4F99-8881-6FC75BF054B0}" was also nowhere to be found. And how do I run setup.exe off the disk? Whenever I try and do anything with the disk, the standard game launcher pops up. with the options Play, Data files, options, elderscrolls.com, etc. Although, every time I put in the disk and activate the launcher, a file gets generated for oblivion.ini, and gets put in my User/Documents/My Games folder.

Double-click the My Computer icon (on the desktop) or get to My Computer another way. Find the optical drive icon in which Oblivion is inserted. Right-click on the icon and select either Open or Explore. Navigate the disc and find the setup.exe and double-click it.
