Edited- I kinda figured out why its not loading the game but I'm confused. I think I need a new video card but I'm not sure. I know my current card isn't going to cut it so what should I do. My budget, its not infinite but I can spend money depending on how much it is. I'm also not sure on the costs so just throw something out there and I'll see if I can get it.

The best card is open to debate. When the game was very new, in 2006, nVIDIA had comparatively few shader units in their graphics cards, and needed to run very fast (and get very hot) to keep up with the shader capabilities of the Radeons from ATI, but they simply couldn't match the image quality at all. The following year, their new Geforce 8n00 generation caught up on shader capabilities, and added a great deal of performance that carried them far beyond the level that ATI was able to answer.

However, they use a "unified" shader unit, which has certain limitations with regard to Pixel Shader SM-3 (Direct3D's Dx9.0c) compared to AMD's approach to those functions. Oblivion is now relatively old and yet Dx9 is still the prevailing game graphics level, because Microsoft and Sony are not trying to compete with the Dx10 / Dx11 capabilities available for PCs with their now elderly game consoles. The relatively high cost of game development means that the great majority of releases are multi-platform, and the consoles' graphics limitation is an effective "cap" on what we get to see in any but very few games (Crytek's are an exception).

My personal opinion is that Radeons seem to work more reliably in the Gamebryo game engine than the Geforces do, so that the best would have to be the HD 5970. You will almost certainly need a very good, very expensive new power supply to go with that one.

I'm probably going to get a Nvidia card I'm not sure which one to get though I'm leaning on something around the 8400 series.

Jumping the gun there. The 8400 series are rather weak and will manage low settings. Post your dxdiag so we can see the system...that way better recommendations are made to you. Compatibility will be in question as well.


Oh and state a budget you're willing to spend on a card.

I'm gonna go up to best buy later today and buy a video card whats the best recommended card that I can run. I'm leaning on Radeon but I'm not sure which version I need. I don't need an expensive card I need something that will allow the game to run smoothly.

Need a bit more information first :

1.) how much of a budget do you have ? (What do you consider not expensive and does that include a new PSU if needed)
2.) What resolution monitor do you play on ? ( looks like DELL IN1910N @ 1366 x 768 )
3.) Is Best Buy the only option for buying ? Best Buy is about the last place to buy a video card ...they tend to be overpriced on most things. If you have a Fry's or Microcenter nearby, you're a bit better off going there. Otherwise online wil be the best source for lowest prices on cards (ie newegg or ewiz)


Your Inspiron 545 PC should come with a decent and underrated 300W-305W power supply...you could get away with cards like a Radeon 4650, 4670, 5570, and 5670 without having to woory about the power supply. Each of these cards will handle the game considerably well

I got a Nvidida GeForce GTS 250 I'm guessing thats going to work.

You should look carefully at the documentation that came with it, because it may just require more 12 V current than the power supply will be able to provide.

Not with your current power supply...too much of a risk as these cards will likely require more than what your power supply can offer. Return it if you can for one of my recommendations or get a new power supply to power the card. The GTS 250 requires at least one 6-pin PCI-E auxiliary connector and your power supply doesn't even have one to begin with...and I don't find molex-to-6-pin adapters to be a smart option here either. You're playing with fire....
