Windows 7+Fallout 3= ? : Fallout 3

I've been playing Fallout 3 on my Vista PC for a year and a half now. Upon going to college, I got a shiny, new laptop with windows 7 on it. I've been trying to run Fallout 3 on windows 7, but it does not work. I run the game, get to menu, and everything works fine. I actually load or start a new game, and 15 seconds in, it freezes up. There is sound, but no graphics change, no recognition of input, and it frustrates me immensely. I have looked around on the internet, and found that this isn't only happening to me. I have checked the FAQ and saw that Bethesda doesn't support windows 7 and Fallout 3. I've heard about various fixes for Fallout and 7, but I've had no luck with what I've tried. Could we make a listof fixes to make Fallout 3 run on Windows?

P.S. Bethesda Staff: Is there any chance of an official patch in the works to support windows 7 and Fallout 3? Are you folks too busy with New Vegas? Can you explain what the problem is between Fallout and Windows 7?

Post a dxdiag.
XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

P.S. Bethesda Staff: Is there any chance of an official patch in the works to support windows 7 and Fallout 3? Are you folks too busy with New Vegas? Can you explain what the problem is between Fallout and Windows 7?

Obsidian is working on New Vegas, not Bethesda, and I'm not sure if they've said anything about Windows 7 compatibility. As for Fallout 3, I don't believe Bethesda is working on a patch; after the GOTY edition was released for the PC and XBox everyone not working on the PS3 DLCs was probably moved to one of their current projects. This is all speculation on my part and as such it could be entirely wrong. :shrug:

Bethesda did say they were no longer working on anything new (DLCs or patches) for Fallout 3.

Heres your problem. Intel chips can not run the game.

There is a file floating around that can force the game to work, however it is strongly advised not to use as it can cause your computer to overheat and damage things.

Well...... crap. Thanks very much for telling me that. Knowing life and Murphy's Law, my laptop won't be able to run New Vegas either. ~~Unless I find that fix and play in a room without heating in the winter~~ :cold:

Well, the requirements for New Vegas will be the same as for Fallout 3 (Possibly slightly higher depending on how Obsidian have tweaked it) So no, New Vegas won't run on the Intel GPU either.

Don't [censored] them on that. My comp runs it just fine.. it's a Vista thing. Vista came out aftyer Fallout 3. I needed a fix to run the thing using vista.. Ok, 2 things wrong here.
1) Vista did not come out after FO3......Windows 7 did but thats not the problem here.
2) Its an Intel HD chipset, which means that it is capable of running the resolution of HD (atleast 1280x720) on the desktop. But the chipset itself will not run the game without a very unstable fix which could cause damage to the onboard chipset or instability with the OS.

And HD doesnt mean too much anymore, its mainly there to add "flare" to the name to make it look better to the average consumer.

If its actually freezing then try the quad core fix.
Open up the .ini file located in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3. *Do not alter the one in the actual game directory labeled Fallout_Default_ini*
In the FALLOUT.ini find the line

bUseThreadedAI=0
change the 0 to a 1

then below it add the line

iNumHWThreads=2

But if its crashing to desktop then make a new thread and post a dxdiag there.
