I bought the game of the year edition for my XBOX 360. I previously had the standard edition with no add-ons.

On the main menu the downloads button is now highlighted, and when I click it it shows a list of all the add-ons.

But when I play the game, I don't seem to be able to access the add-on areas. I have read the sticky posts.

So my question is if there is any way to easily tell if the add-ons are installed correctly. I am playing from a new game now and have just exited vault 101. Is there something I can do in the wasteland to show whether the add-ons are there or not?

Do I need to be connected to the Internet for example?

Well when you exit the vault you should get messages and radio signals

Yes, when you exit the vault you should get a lot of messages about new signals and missions. If you play without the add-ons you only have 1 (active) mission.
