Skyrims crates/chests/etc. - try something on !

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:34 am

I played Oblivion today and I recognized how the chest/crate-system, or how you will call it, should be done in a different way.

I think it would be better that you can try things on (Armor, weapons, clothes, etc.), directly out of the chest, without the need to put them into your inventory first.

What do you think about it?

I don't really see how this could be beneficial. Maybe being able to read books from chests, but I don't know about clothes.

I would like containers to have a limit to how much stuff you can put in them though. It never really made sense to me why you would be able to shove five full sets of armor into a dresser drawer.

Sure, why not?

Maybe being able to read books from chests...

That's also a very good idea!

I think the time taken to add it could be better used on any of a hundred-plus other things. Like fixing the nightmarish inventory system so that putting it back into the crate after you try it on isn't a pain in the gluteus maximus, making the "try on while clothes shopping" code completely unnecessary.

Careful, you'll call down the wrathful "OMG I don't want Morrowind 2.0!!one!!1!!" crowd on your head. ;)

I think it adds to the realism. In real life you also wouldn't put a jeans from a chest into your bag and then try it on. You would try it on and then put it into your bag or put it back into the chest.
For sure it isn't a pain to do the way it is implemented now, but let's say the way it is now is unusual. I would HIGHLY appreciate it, If it will be implemented like that.

It always bugged me how you oculd fit that in there, but not go in yourself. What, are you going to fall into the massive pit of items?

Would this also be applied to vendors? Like, an armor & weapons merchant has shelves full of stuff in his store. You pick up a sword to see how it swings, or a shield to see how it looks with the rest of your armor, and only get in trouble when you try to walk out of the building without paying?

That I would like.

I think that would be cool, too. Actually testing all the equipment in a store... good idea.

NOOOOOOOO! As a hoarder, no no and no. I want to be able to keep all the stuff I find, without having to own a warehouse for it. Besides, there WAS a limit on what you could store in a container in Oblivion, because if you overfilled a container it would cause a corrupt save and CTD upon saving. I doubt many people ever encountered that bug, but it ruined one of my games.

Thank you.

It's not so much about testing something before I purchase it so much as it is about adding some realism. If I go to Best Buy, there isn't going to be a cop standing there waiting to take me to jail for picking up a DVD and having a look at it. There should be a different threshold from the norm: I'm not stealing an item available for purchase until I make it out of the immediate area without paying for it. As for other owned items, it should depend largely on the owner's disposition. For example, if I walk into a tavern known to be frequented by a criminal element in Skyrim, who really don't like Orcs/Dunmer/Argonian/etc., I should expect a fight if I touch just about anything.

I rather like the idea of forcing players who collect enough treasure to make a dragon jealous to have to find enough space to store it. If they can put in the effort into acquiring all that crap, they can be bothered to purchase a large enough house for it all. BTW, I'd be well-included in that category, so don't think I'm just picking on a player-type that I don't care for. I could fill a Vivec canton with all the Daedric stuff I've taken from Dremoras and Golden Saints.

Why on EARTH would you want to force another player into difficulties like that? If you don't want to store loads of things in one place, then don't do it. But don't start sticking your oar into my gaming/hoarding style. What is wrong with some people, are you just some sort of a sadist?

I actually only used the chests/etc. for armor and weapons. Everything else I dropped on the floorin my house in Skingrad. The satisfaction I had from looking at my giant glowing pile of jewels was incredible.

No, I don't wanna do that. What if you wanna just pick up the item and not try it on?
However, to SEE the items in the chest should be something implemented.
