Pitt - Wernher dead but quest still active

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:27 am

Hi, I'm doing the Pitt. I sided with Ashur and did not kidnap the child. I killed Wernher earlier and he is dead/lying in "Wernher's Hideout". My active quest is "Free Labor - Stop Wernher". I have searched his house and am not sure what to do now. I'm not sure why my quest is still "Stop Wernher" when he is already dead. I cannot get back in Haven (door is locked). I've also gone underground (through the man hole in the Steel Yard) although I've been unable to find a working computer to unlock the door at the end.

I've already completed these "Free Labor" quest tasks:
- Find out Wernher's location from Midea
- Leave without the baby
- Find the cure in Ashur's palace
- Meet Ashur in Haven
- Retrieve your gear
- Go through Uptown and enter Haven

I'm playing on the XBOX and have the game add-on pack DVD for The Pitt and Operation Anchorage. I've played through the game a long time ago but kidnapped the child that time and did not get stuck like this. Right now, I cannot leave The Pitt (because of the active quest).

Thanks for any help,
Peter

How and when did you kill Wernher? And why? I would expect him to just be knocked unconscious.... as he is required for his end speech.... The safe bet would be to reload a save from before killing him. And yes, that would mean re-doing everything.

How did you gain access to Wernher's hideout before leaving Ashur? That doorway doesn't even appear, until after you talk to Midea, when she realizes that you've sided with Ashur.

Werner is laying facedown in his hideout. I guess he could just be unconscious. I can search him (he has Abraxo Cleaner). I did talk to Midea and stole the note. I assume thats what let me get into Wernher's hideout.

I did not mean to imply that I got into Wernher's hideout before leaving Ashur. I spoke with Ashur then made my way back to Media's. After that is where I seen to have gotton stuck (found Wernher either dead or unconscious) and I may need to restart.

Sounds right so far.... After talking to Midea, you go deal with Wehrner, then after you kill him, you go back to Ashur where he crows about having been able to trust you after all, blah blah blah... Then Ashur tells you about the ammo press, and then that's that.

Reload then, a save from before killing Wehrner.

Does seem like a bug.
Only other thing I can think of is if you used fast travel and there are still some rebelling slaves walking around somewhere. I don't know if that would cause problems with finishing the quest, but one never knows.

I did Fast Travel a couple times back to the Pitt Train Yard to see if I could leave. I think I had already killed all the "rebelling" slaves (those that attacked me after I finished with Ashur a while ago).

Tonight I went around killing any slaves and Pitt Raiders I could find. I also killed "Friday" (Pitt Raider who runs a store). She had lots of goods on her including Ashur's key which I was hoping would let me back into Haven, but it did not. I did read that there should be a key in Wernher's hideout on a bench but I have not been able to find it. I also tried some different difficulty levels but that did not change my quest/help either.

I don't have a Saved Game far enough back so I'll probably just spend a few more hours wondering around before I take a break and start the whole game over again. Its a great game. I only started replaying a few days ago to do Operation Anchorage again but got carried away doing some of the other quests to get my character built up the way I like him (I like the stealth/lock picking/computer hacking skills). I'm almost up to Level 10. Last time I played through all of Fallout 3 I had Fawkes for too long and then the game got kind of boring because he is so powerful (I was up to something like 120 hours by then!).

I wish there was a built in ability to start Fallout 3 over at a certain point without playing a new game. I've encountered bugs in a couple of the COD games (I think one is COD 2 or 3 with Binoculars) and its been nice to be able to start a "Mission" over again (not the whole game as in this case).

Thanks for the tips.

The most important thing to remember is:

KEEP A LOT OF SAVES!!

I have ten hard saves. I make a new save before I enter anything, and before I am about to start a quest, or immediately after receiving the quest. As I progress, I delete old saves, except the one before I leave the vault. If I'm out in the wastes for what seems like a long time (several encounters), I will stop and make a hard save right there.

The Pitt is glitchy, but Point Lookout even more so. After my game has crashed a couple of times in PL, it all evens out and stops crashing. Save often, for any Bethesda game. We all love 'em, but massive games like these require us to be vigilant as well.
