I've done this, and now LOD remains, but no land data/limited land data :shrug:

Did you check with just the ESM active, or with ESPs editing the worldspace active too? Any ESPs which edit the worldspace would also need updating to use the injected records.

Just the .ESM active, and huge sections of the worldspace are without land data now.

Most odd. That's not supposed to happen (surprisingly). Are you using the latest version of Gecko, and did you check the readme to see if anything special needed to be done?

It means that you didn't shift the VWD objects like trees to mod index 00, hence the missing land.
