Will Skyrim be set to scale?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:09 am

Cyrodiil was no where near as big as it should have been. If it was located on Earth, it would have been the 5th smallest country in the world. In Oblivion, the "continent" of Tamriel would be smaller than Hawaii. If Skyrim were set to scale, the world would be massive and it would take actual days to travel across the land. But there is the potential of being able to ride dragons in the game which would solve that issue.

Unfortunately, another issue pops up which is content. It would be impossible to make Skyrim as huge as it should be without sacrificing content quality.

So, potentially, Skyrim could be even bigger than Oblivion's Cyrodiil. It just depends on the scale/content ratio.

I think it will be about the same size, but much more detailed.

For skyrim to be set to scale it would have to be the largest videogame world of all time. Sorry.

Cyrodiil is canonically about 1/3 larger than Skyrim. The devs will probably make Skyrim about the same size as Oblivion's map in-game though.

I find it highly unlikely that Skyrim will be as large as it is supposed to be in lore, considering the work that would involve. And I really wouldn't want it either, as that would likely come at a large sacrifice in the detail, variety and quality of the game's content, and I've already felt that Oblivion was not varied enough, I somehow doubt making it on Daggerfall's scale would improve that, no matter what kind of technology Bethesda has access to. But it may be that the map can safely be bigger than Cyrodiil without sacrificing too much in the way of quality. If this can be done, I'd say it would be the best approach. In the end, I don't mind if the map is somewhat smaller than it should be in lore, provided that it's large enough to provide enough content to keep me interested, and large enough to create an illusion that it's of a somewhat believable size.

For skyrim to be set to scale it would have to be the largest videogame world of all time. Sorry.

Actually, I wouldn't be so sure of that, it would certainly be the largest game world on the market, I'm sure, but would it be larger than Daggerfall?

There is no potential of being able to ride dragons. And I really really doubt they made it that big. Think of how bland and undetailed the land would be if they stretched it all out. It'd be like Daggerfall, almost.

Set to scale? Not gonna happen. Bigger than Oblivion? Probably. While none of us know the technology and resources they've got behind the game and how much subsequent effort goes into the world, I think it's safe to say that they'll increase the size, at the very least, in order to remain competitive with other, larger-than-Oblivion sandbox games on the market.

I think it'll easily be bigger than Oblivion, but not set to scale.

There are two reasons why Skyrim could be bigger than Cyrodiil was in Oblivion - one is more realistic landscape and a more epic feel. Secondly, the vertical dimension will be quite larger due to the various mountainous areas. Can you imagine what the fjords would be like? Flat terrain would be easy to traverse and quite small, but a massive cliff-valley in the same space as that flat terrain feels a lot larger and much harder to traverse.

It's not perfect, but this will give you an idea of Tamriel's real size according to Daggerfall.

bah I wish they could make it real scale, but that would be humanly impossible to fill with good content in our day and age, maybe a few thousand years into the future that would be a normal thing to do :P.

GO GO Holo-deck
