Going back to the beginning...

Post » Fri May 25, 2012 11:05 pm

I've played RPG type games for years, the one that first got me hooked was Morrowind.

I've played various games since, having added Fallout 3 and, most recently, Fallout:NV to my collection.

I don't remember noticing the first Fallout game when it was originally published but I've seen lots of mentions of it on the forums so I thought I'd go back to see how the series started. I've just purchased a games bundle on Steam;- Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics for £15.99, which seems like a good deal.

So, I'm going to get back to the beginning and see what everyone's been raving about.....
Maybe I'll end up qualifying as a dinosaur, I'm certainly old enough! (60)......

Should have bought the discs off Amazon or something, I got them for £3 something or maybe £5 something.

I should really pick Fallout 1 back up though, kinda gave up when I couldn't kill a certain enemy with a desert eagle and grenades...

- This should be in Fallout Series though since it's nothing really to do with New Vegas.

OK, I should have looked at Amazon - could have got it for £6.62!

As for the forum, this is the general discussion forum and I was commenting on how playing NV has gotten me interested in how the series developed so I reckon it's not out of place.

I will have a look at the Fallut forum at some point, but I don't want to go too soon in case I accidentally pick up spoilers. Lots of stuff gets mentioned here that should really be in spoilers, I think people forget that there are still noobs out there who aren't familiar with the game.

Typo? You gave up because you couldn't kill a certain enemy with a D.eagle and grenades? Or did you spell it right and were actually commenting on how easy the combat is?
If you think it's too easy then just play Fallout 2. Bit harder with the combat.

I'm at Adytum trying to kill the Deathclaws for the Gun Runners but my weapons are crap and Ian and Katja don't provide good back up. The best weapon I have is a laser rifle but it's only got 4 shots and I usually only land 2 shots and miss the rest, and my AP are terribly low - I can only fire once every turn and use the last 3/4 AP to put some distance between me and the Deathclaws.
I tried once to kill Lou-Tenant but that failed and the Nightkin in the Cathedral mauled be with 1 shot from their minigun or flamethrower.
I like the game but the combat isn't my style so much, or I've just not adjusted properly since I'm usually a melee character, and it's not good at complimenting that style -_-

You should take some time to do some quests. Have you done the one for the BoS? You can basically get power armor for free once you're down. Then try and get a plasma rifle and a lot of microfusion cells.

I seen them and went to the Glow. I either just left the place or I died - most likely though I got paranoid about my rad levels and left or I just could find the way inside. Found a massive crater though...

Yeah took me a while to get inside the crater. You have to use a rope on that iron thing to the left of the crater. Also it's easy to finish the quest. Just buy 2 rad-xs from the drug guy in the Hub to get 100% rad resist. No enemies on that first floor (where you get the holodisk) and then walk out. Pretty good armor that power armor is. Too good actually.

Through my experience it isn't great until you get it hardened. Deathclaws will still tear right through you if you let them, and super mutants don't care either. But if you get it early then it is really overpowered.

This should be useful knowledge, I always carry a rope and I must have just not seen the 'iron thing' you mention.
Everything is so damn expensive, having the PA will definitely help me put up more of a fight against the Deathclaws.
