Did you know.....

...that when the american scientists worked on the manhattan project, they where afraid that the explosion from the bomb would be so hot it would set the world's atmosphere on fire.... but they tested it anyway. That's just stupid.

Well, the argument was forwarded, but dismissed, I think.

Progress requires trial and error, plain and simple.

Well, aren't you glad they did? I know I am.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well.

Well it's like with the Collider they just got running not too long ago. There was some worry that if it worked it could rip the fabric of the universe apart, or cause the Earth to implode. Scientists agreeing on any one possibility is kind of a rarity.

This is the first thing I thought of after looking at the OP's post :P Strangelets, sound cute, don't they? Well they're responsible for turning every atom they touch into "strange matter" (sounds like the makings of a new mario game) and from this they expand, and absorb, and as long as they keep coming into contact with atoms, they could essentially turn the entire planet into a..strange, umm, husk? I guess :/

But for better or for worse, this theory has also been discredited, and the collider deemed safe enough for satisfying scientific curiosity :P But it's broken for now, and I feel alot safer for it ^_^

Yeah, but they also thought the Nazi's were two years ahead on development of an atomic weapon so in their mind they had to push forward with it or the world would be screwed anyway.

Despite the fact the Nazis heavy water supply was basically destroyed by bombings and the Norwegian resistance, but they still thought the Nazis were ahead of em.

Also the American generals wanted a weapon to end the war as quick as possible with Japan capitulating, so they wouldn't have to do a landing which was estimated to cost 200k American lives.

1 million was the estimation
