[RelZ] Lookout Radio

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:41 am

Hey folks. Dedicated board lurker (since the Morrowind days), stepping out of my lurkery comfort zone and posting for the first time to announce my very first full-blown-mod-with-an-esp-and-everything-no-really release. Hey, if it's taken me this long to post, might as well make it an actual contribution, right? Anyhow, the thread title and description should say it all, but here's a bit of the readme as well:

Mod Description And Such
========================
If you're like me, you enjoyed the rather large exterior region that Point Lookout added, but got pretty fidgety after a while without any kind of radio to listen to in-game. That's why I ended up making this mod, to add a whole new radio station - one to match Point Lookout's atmosphere, to boot. This station includes 20 vintage tracks, mostly old folk (or hillbilly, or mountain, or Appalachian, or old-time, call it what you like) music recorded during the 30's and 40's. Hopefully if you use this mod you'll agree that this selection fits right along with your gameplay in the Point Lookout region. If not, hey, don't blame me - the place is such a hodgepodge of elements (hill people in the swamps, mountain coal mines overlooking... the Chesapeake Bay?) that processing it all can be enough to make me go cross-eyed.

The regionally and/or geographically astute may well note that the station might make a bit more sense coming from southwest of the Capital Wasteland, and I'd agree - but that doesn't give us anything to listen to down in Point Lookout, does it? Anyhow, what you got here is 20 songs of tragedy, prohibition, drinking, dying, being poor, killing, an occasional railroad, a tiny bit of goofiness, and sometimes a friendly reminder that the Lord and your momma don't want you doing any of this stuff -- all set to fiddle, guitar, banjo, harmonica, and... jug. Oh yes, we got some jug band action.

As the station goes now, it's set to play in the exterior cells and linked interiors in the Point Lookout area. There's no DJ, and I haven't gotten my head around the scripting enough yet to set the playlist to prevent track repetition (looks simple though, and after reading up a bit on it that's the first on my to-do list). I hope to start expanding/tuning up soon, but I wanted to lay out the bare bones for the station (and maybe gauge interest in the project - if everybody tells me to go to hell then hey, there's some time saved).

If you enjoy the mod, that's great. If you love the music as much as I do now, that's even greater. If you have any suggestions for more tracks and/or other ideas that might make the station grow, I'm all ears. If you hate the music, feel free to not tell me, because I couldn't care less. Go listen to your hophipping or rat music or whatever you kids are into nowadays.

IF IT HASN'T BEEN MADE CLEAR ENOUGH YET, THIS MOD REQUIRES THE POINT LOOKOUT DLC.

Run, don't walk, to get my amazing mod http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9194!

Hmmm, I pretty much download any radio mod I come across and this sounds interesting. I however really doubt I will be able to like the music at all, but I am willing to give it a shot.

sounds good, i might be interested, but maybe add some Jimmy Rogers, some Hank Williams, or maybe even some Johnny Cash in there, for a little country feel. the back woods isn't all about fiddle and banjo but certainly a part of it, of course it's your mod you do with it as you see fit. look forward to seeing more of this mod soon.

Oh, trust me, I'm two generations removed from folks in the Virginia mountains, so I'm not trying to misrepresent anybody here. The focus (but not entirety) of the station is for old time mountain music, so I really don't want to go too carried away with an actual country feel. That said, as I was putting together the tracks for the mod, I was indeed eyeballing (or earfulling, whatever) some Jimmie Rodgers, so if I end up adding some more songs to the station, he at least will definitely be in.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, all who had them, and I'm proud to say I finally got some of the scripting through my thick skull, and will be uploading an updated .esp for the station soon. Now with less track repetition!

Fricking fantastic!
I was hoping for just something exactly like this! Pity I already just finished Lookout, but I modded the esp so I can get it in the capital wasteland too! (just a thought - you could have maybe some sort of "pipboy amplifier gizmotron" or something at the end of the PL main quest so you can then get it everywhere as a reward)
You've collected some seriously fantastic old songs here, I love that you've chosen real authentic old-timey stuff (I could listen to old-timey music all day).
If you were going to add more, I'd suggest perhaps a few slower, more sparse and less upbeat numbers to mix it up a bit, and give more of that "spooky lonesome swampland" sort of feel.
Something like The Wayfaring Stranger would be perfect, I think (Bill Monroe and Emmylou Harris both have great versions, but I'm sure you'd know older and better ones).
Oh yeah, and considering the huge amount of freakishly dangerous mutant-lobster-monsters around, you gotta have "Crawdad Hole" in there too! :P

Top-notch stuff! Thanks heaps for this!

Closing this for now...I don't know if this would be an issue because of copyright for the songs in question.

If these are public domain and you can point me to where they're available for free, shoot me a PM.

Thanks
