A few random questions, new to Oblivion.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:07 am

So I've been playing for about two weeks now (360), and have just a few questions!

What's the level cap in this game? I have a few levels on queue, (waiting for/ trying to use my training wisely,) and I'm at level 22. When does it end?

Do your skills go over 100? Do they have a cap? My light armor is my highest at the moment, (embarrassing I know) at 98.

Would you suggest putting training into major or minor skills? I had already decided to put most of my training thus far into my minor skills, that I want to be at LEAST 25 in all of them.

That's all I can think of right now, that I'm not playing, thanks in advance!

Your level is capped when all your major skills are at 100. Since different characters begin the game with slight variance to the levels of their major skills (due to racial perks or specialization), the maximum level varies somewhat, but will be around 50.

If you hear of characters higher than that, it is due to exploiting the fact that when you spend lots of time in jail, you can lose skills - then train them up again. Since everything is available in the game by level 30 and your foes get stronger as you level up, there is really no point in going for high levels.

Once you earn your level up (get the level up icon), things are locked in for that level. That means there is no advantage to delaying the actual sleep to execute the level up.

If you enter your starting stats (when you first create the character) into this web site it should estimate your max level.

Basically the level is usually constrained by how many level ups you can get in Major skills. The lower the starting level of Major Skills the higher the level. But not by much.

You can increase skills over 100 with fortifications. Or by draining a skill that is at 100 and then get training. And a few other ways. But there is no point. Except for Athletics and Acrobatics there is no benefit to skill over 100.

And why be embarrassed with Light Armor at 98. I think it should be something you're proud of

It depends. In general, minor skills. Because increasing majors too fast without training some of the minors associated with the same attribute can give you poor attribute bonuses. And since the game levels the world to your character's level, then you can potentially get weaker as you level up, if you level up too fast and ignore minors.

Keep asking the questions, no matter how silly they might seem.
You have only been playing for two weeks, so nobody expects you to understand it. And keep reading the forums, it is amazing what you can learn.

The leveling system is a nightmare at first glance, but is easy to follow once you gain experience.

The site we all use for Oblivion is uesp. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion

Acadian and I have slightly different views about the value of leveling beyond 30. In my view, there is plenty of reason to do so. It's true the enemies simply have more health, but they are not a threat to me past about level 20, anyway. However, continuing to level past 30 allows me to develop my characters as they wish to develop rather than limiting them. Since the enemies are irrelevant to them and since the enjoyment of the game for me is the character development process, I think that there are plenty of reasons to level past 30.

It all depends on what you want and what you enjoy, of course.

As the others have said, they can go past 100 but with no extra benefits. One of my mages has a destruction skill of 110 but there is no difference in his magicka use, damage e.t.c than when his destruction was at level 100.

98 in light armor is great, especially after only two weeks! I've been with my current character for four months and his light armor is only at 57. (It's a major skill for him as well!) :D

Athletics and Acrobatics give benefits past 100, but they are the only skills that do so.

Agreed. My character that I've had for a year has light armour a only about 68 (though it is a minor) even thoguh he uses it all the time.
