Chapter One: Trails and Trials

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:05 pm

Dandel placed his drink carefully next to the skeletons hands. If they want me to give up anything else they can forget it, he thought, slightly annoyed that he had to give up his precious drink. Even if deep down it was the only way to solve the puzzle. His idea that everyone should put in their own item actually started to work, this was suprising as he thought it completely of the top of his head, and even made him feel a little proud of himself.

''Haha! Yes it's actually working! Sh*t I can't believe it.'' However Dandel realised that the doors were getting quite close to closing. He then turned to the large Nord. ''Oh c'mon, just give it up. I had to give up my drink, and it pisses me off that you're to selfish to give up yours. I mean if you don't give it up then why did you even bother coming? It's the only way to get to the Khajit. Now stop being so f***ing stubborn and put that crap you call a drink into the bloody tomb!'' Dandel couldn't stand selfish people. Admitadly he himself was a bit greedy but he would never act selfish like that.

Even though the light was still dim, what the group was doing was appeared to be working, ableit slowly. But everytime something positive happened, the doors were still closing. However Tucharon did a good job of trying to brace the doors, but it wasn't going to work forever. They needed to work fast. Dandel heard Korro ask someone what he could give up, he didn't take anything from the last room but the Dunmer still had an idea.

''Korro! Give up one of your blades. Yeah I know you didn't find them in the room but they're still dear to you right? C'mon there ain't no time to waste!'' Dandel tried to speed up the group, it seemed he was the only one the least bit nervous about being trapped in a stone cold room filled with corpses for the rest of eternity.

Dandel awaited for the rest of the group to give something up, frankly he was getting frustrated at the time they were taking.''

"WHAT!?!?" Howled Korro at the proposed question, "I've had these babies for as long as it matters! There's no way im parting with them." he then looked down the between the closing door, repeating the written word in his head as he read it. Retreat...

OOC: It's clear that this RP is most active when I am asleep <_<

IC: Everyone seemed busy sacrificing something they held dear and Aryon was pleased that everyone was dedicated to this cause and even the likes of Dandel were willing to give up their 'precious' drink, something that may not be of worth to others. However the wizard had nothing of particular value on his persona other than his armor which wasn't of much worth to him and easy enough to acquire back home in Morrowind. All of his items of value he had left behind in his tower so that he may travel light. Perhaps items of value would suffice to and what he had attatched to his armor hip was a small sack of gold counting up to 5,000 gold.

It's an interesting riddle but it makes no sense. Surely it should have been an eye for an eye riddle where if you took something from the last chamber then you must give something back here. And those who didn't musn't sacrifice anything here. I don't know what morals this Khajiit has but whatever they are, they are strange. he thought in his mind

Time was running out and if they did not hurry they would be trapped in the chamber, perhaps forever or maybe not and Aryon did not want to go out like this. "I have nothing of value on me other than this sack of 5,000 gold" he spoke as he unattatched it and held it in his hand "Whether or not this will suffice I do not know but it is all I can give" and at those words he walked up to the sarcophagus and placed the sack of gold by the skeletons empty skull.

Tucharon took the book and skimmed through it. Incredible, that a book would exist. I can only imagine what could be learned from it. The Altmer seemed almost entranced, but then snapped out of it. But there is no point if I die, trapped in the fort. He wasn't sure how long that rusty cog would hold the door, so he ran up to the corpse and placed the book into the coffin. Hopefully, Korro could be persuaded to give up one of his weapons. Still, how much did this corpse need before the light would match the others? And even then, would they do it in time?

"I took nothing from the first room either." Arnand agreed.

"However, it is evident - Something precious to us must be sacrificed to move on."

Arnand thought for a second, reached around his neck, and held the Necromancer's Amulet.

"Something very precious."

Arnand pulled the Amulet until the string snapped, and walked up to the skeleton everybody had been giving to. He laid the emerald-encrusted pendant on top of the empty ribcage, turned around and walked back down the stairs. He opened his pouch and replaced it with a Spelldrinker Amulet that had been hidden amongst the potions.

Arnand sighed.

"It would have dissappeared anyway. That is the nature of the Necromancer's Amulet."

Nevertheless, the ceiling stone glowed a bit brighter.

As more and more trinkets that held value of some sort or another to their former owners were placed among the coffin, the door still grinded against the Dwemer cog, attempting to shut itself. Alkhil had long since given up the two objects he had taken from the other room, and was still waiting on two severely stubborn, and severely stupid people. "Nord, just put the mead in there already. When we're out of this place, I'll show you to an inn where it is served, which is actually close to here." Hearing what Korro said and watching him carefully, Alkhil suspected he was lieing, plus, he was a Khajit and they're known to lie quite a bit, so Alkhil decided to take a chance. "Khajit, you are horrible at lieing, so give up and put whatever you took in that sarcophagus." It could be noted that Alkhil's attitude towards the Nord had changed slightly, but only from desperation to advance already.

OOC: In Oblivion mead was all over the place, but in Morrowind you had to go to Solsthiem. I don't think they should serve it in the Colovian West, but because I'm hopefully going to a 4th of July parade/party, I'll be agreeable.

With a grunt, Larth took the two extra pints of mead and gave the skeleton his precious drink. There was more mead to be had, somewhere. At any rate, they needed to be done with this. He wanted no more time wasted. This room was bothersome at best.

What could the next trial be? Larth wondered, hopefully something that allows me to make full use of my axe. With thoughts of what could lay ahead, he stood stoically back and awaited something to happen. Patience, just wait for something to happen.

OOC: sorry for the delay, lets continue :)

IC: As the ceiling stone shone brighter with each donation given, all eyes appeared to be on Narkiorrou. To his knowledge he was the only person yet to make a sacrificial gesture at the skeleton. Knowing he'd likely be in deep sh*t if he didnt make his contribution soon and caused them all to become trapped. He took one last look out the door and was tempted to make his getaway, but what would that solve other than having their poor trapped souls haunting his mind.

"Sod it!" he cursed and he ran back up the steps while rummaging in his bag. As he reached the coffin he pulled out the the large topaz he found in the previous room, and placed it in the coffin. He let go and quickly looked upward to check whether it made the stone fully active.... no change.

"Nope"

He took back the Topaz and put it in his bag, quickly taking out the ornate dagger he found and placing that in before looking up.

"Nope" he repeated and went about continuing the same pattern of actions for about 6 items.

While Korro was testing out which item he actually held any attachment to, the cog in the door had began to flake and peel, suddenly it buckled slightly and made a splintering noise that rung out into the room, the door had just about closed yet probably had enough room to slip through.

Korro continued blissfully unaware.

"Nope"

Tucharon looked at the stone, and the door. The cog was breaking, that door was going to close. He started to weigh whether he wanted to run or not. If I run, there is no telling what has changed on the other side of the door. And if I do escape, the town guard would never believe me if I go for help. He chose to remain in the room, although he was slowly becoming less worried and more grim.

"Korro, give it something that actually means something to you! The door has just about closed!" The spellsword, admittedly, had made part of his donation with a book that another had found in the treasure room, but if their lives hadn't been on the line, he would have never been able to part with it. A loud crack rung out, he looked back and saw the cog broken. That cat had better make a real donation, or this may be it.

OOC: sorry for my absence, just pretend Jack already made his contribution in silence

IC: as much as Jack resented it they were correct that his shovel was his most valuable possesion, 5475 seprims in enchantment, and another 500 septims in re enforcing the shaft and blade, and countless ore coin spent to keep it from breaking or losing charge. practicly all of Jack's money had been spent in his odd weapon and he had grown attached to it. now he was trying to find out what "Retreat" at the door meant, because it appeared to have a similar stone like the other marked places had the coince of words just made Jack wonder what would activate this stone. "If it wanted us to leave before the door closed it could just as well have been 'Escape' or 'flee'"something just seemed odd about "Retreat" like there would be a battle of some kind...

Dandel breathed a sigh of relief when the Nord finally gave up his mead. But was still worried about the door slowly trapping the group in.

'' 'Bout Bloody time Nord.'' Dandel said, pointing a finger at the man.

The light was surely but slowly getting brighter, Arnard placed his beautiful blue amulet into the coffin, and Tucharon placed a Dwemer book, something that Dandel couldn't even begin to understand what it was. However there was still one person who had not yet joined the cause and placed something into the coffin. Korro. Even though the khajit started putting little gems into the coffin they just weren't doing the trick, they obviously were not close enough to his heart. This was a huge problem, the cog was started to corrode rapidly and its material was starting to flake and spark a way. Dandel knew Korro would have to give up one of his daggers.

''Look Korro, you know it and I know it, you 'ave to give up one of them bloody daggers.'' The way the khajit look at Dandel suggested it wasn't going to happen, the Dunmer felt he needed to make a more aggressive approach. He unsheathed his golden dagger. ''Korro, I admit it, I like you but you've taken this sh*t to far now buddy. Now put the f***ing weapon in the coffin, or I'll make you do it, and anyone in this room who wants to live will help me. Got it?'' Dandel pointed his dagger towards the khajit, but without making any physical action.

Dandel kept a close eye on Korro, waiting for a reaction.

"Go to hell jerk." Korro rudely shrugged as he continued systematically trying his items, it was pointless though as the only attachment he had to any of the objects was one of profit and he had little care for money in the end. "nope...."

"hell leave if you want to, i'm staying till this is done."

Now that everyone had contributed something, Elissandre watched with a hint of irritation the khajit's fidgeting and reluctant donation. Each time he's giving what... a tenth of what he picked up and that's about it, if not less. Nothing that matters when you think about it.

"That's funny. I've heard more than a few khajits lamenting the other race's deplorably materialist way of clinging to riches, and insisting on how their own casualness with such things was incomparably enlightened in comparison."

Her tone turning slightly ironic. "Well, looks like in Elsweyr enlightening stops were one's pockets begins. You should try dropping several items, rather than a penny packet."

As the quickly crumbling cog began to break from the pressure of the doors it was clear that everyone had grown fed up of Narkiorrou's laid back attitude. With time ticking on people were threatening him and telling him what to do. In the end it mattered not what Korro gave up because he held no true attachment to anything as his veiw on life was 'Easy come Easy go'. But Elissandre was right, a single item wouldn't do, and he'd have to make a much larger sacrifice, still unwilling to part with his blades, he stood sharply and took a deep breathe.

"I'm gonna kick myself for this.." he sighed as he removed his bag from his shoulder and placed the entire thing, trinkets and contraband still inside it, into the coffin. ".. But i'll be back for you, i promise."

As he backed off the light above clicked and shone into its full glorious silver. A final large grinding noise rung out and vibrated the walls, the shaking was the final straw on the camel's back and sent the cog to split straight in two as the door slammed shut.

"Sh*t...." Korro said effortlessly, looking as if he were about to get an ear full for his incompetence.

OOC: Is the light above the door glowing at the moment?

IC:

"That can't be good." A perfectly good dwemer cog lost and they still ended up sealed up here. He wasn't furious at Korro, it was his choice to not go through the door. Was there something else to this riddle? And how much air was left in the room? No, I can't just give in now, there has to be something more.

Tucharon walked up to the sealed door and tapped a few times on it. "I suppose we could try and blast through the door, but the fire would accelerate the consumption of air and give us even less time. Or is there more to this puzzle that what we've seen?"

Arnand slapped his face as the door finally closed.

"Great." he said simply.

Nothing had happened, even after Korro placed his entire bag into the coffin. Instead, they were now trapped in a lonely, desolate room with no visible exit, having only themselves and three cadavers for company.

Tucharon was talking about blasting through the door, but that fire would do more harm than good. Arnand lazily cast a Lightning Ball at the door, but to no effect.

Annoyed, Arnand cast a Telikineses spell at the Learn corpse to keep him occupied. He made the chains bounce around to make it look as if it were dancing. He hummed a little tune to go along with the spell's antics.

OOC: My damn internet crashed before I could make a massive post and I can't be bothered to fully write it out again so I apoligise for its shortness.

IC: Aryon was contemplating whether or not he should parylise the Khajiit and put the blades in himself when he decided he would give up all of his loot he gathered, but it was too late. The doors had shut behind them, trapping them inside the chamber. He knew that the Khajiit would be the one who would get blamed, he wouldn;t be surprised if the creature got ripped limb from limb but surely there had to be more. The mysterious person who brought them here wouldn't leave them to die would he?

"No one panic now, it would simply waste what oxygen is left in here. I believe that there has to be more to come" Aryon said hoping to calm everyone down and also hoping that another door would open somewhere with the chamber.

When Korro finally decided to part with his bag and the light finally shone as bright as the others Elissandre felt relieved. Even as the door closed over what was left of the cog. She listened to the comments, before adding her own opinion.

"I'm sure I've heard and felt something moving before the cog broke. It's the vibrations form it that finished it and let the doors close. Somethign heavy moving and grating on stone while the doors were stil held can means only one thing : Some sort of secret door or moving wall must have opened close by. We should check the room's walls for a new passage. Or at least something unlocked we can move aside."

Larth rolled his eyes at Dandel's remark, "drunkard." He didn't much mind if the Dunmer heard.

"Well," Mordereth remarked, "so much for retreat." He glanced about at the other doors. They all seemed quite shut at the moment. Something would have to be done about that, but as solutions seemed to offer themselves freer than a Bosmer floozy in this place, he thought he'd let the castle come-a-calling before giving all too serious thought to escape. Besides, the Cat wouldn't leave his whole new batch of recruits to rot in a dank room forever. Maybe just for a bit.

Eventually the Khajit put in all his treasures, still refusing to give up his blades though. A click was heard and the light became bright, giving off a beautiful silver colour. Dandel was about to cheer but then he heard a noise that he didn't want to. The two enormous doors had sealed shut, making a thundering and clamouros sound. The pure power of the doors had split the dwemer cog into two pieces. The Dunmer just stared at the door, trying to keep in all the anger in his body. But it was no good.

''F***, f***, damn, damn!!!'' Dandel screamed as he fell to his knees banging on the metal doors, hurting his wrist in the process. He then turned to the Khajit with an evil and sadistic facial expression. ''Yoouuu. Yoouu!! Yooou f***ing bastard! You see what you done! Now we're all trapped in this hell hole, just waiting to die! How do you feel eh? You should feel pretty rotten right now, and pretty scared to. I was a fool to like you in the first place, you stupid cat...'' Dandel was only angry because he was scared. He tried not to show it however.

Dandel turned to the others. How could they be so bloody calm? Dandel thought, perplexed as to how none of the events just passed had bothered them. He was almost crying with anger right now, he had only just realised how much selfish people bothered him. The Dunmer observed the room, looking for any sign of hope, but he saw nothing in sight. Just cold, dank and dirty walls. The place where he thought he would live the rest of his life in, then die. Out of pure rage, he smacked the wall as hard as he could. The adrenaline and rage stopped him from feeling much pain. It was then that he heard Aryon mention something about not panicing and that there may be more to come.

''Panic? Well why in Oblivion shouldn't I panic?! We're stuck here, with barely anything to eat or drink and about to die! And you wonder why I don't panic! Oh and if there is anything more to come I'll be very suprised 'cause nothings 'appened yet 'as it?'' Dandel spoke to Aryon, but not sounding angry, just upset. However Ellisandre seemed to have a good idea, suggesting the group tries to look for a hiddden tunnel or an escape route. Even though Dandel had a brief and vague observation he didn't go into a full on search.

''Hmm maybe, I wouldn't count on it, seems like we're pretty much gonna be left here to die, but there ain't nothin' else to do. C'mon lets take a look.'' With that Dandel turned away from Ellisandre to look for more clues.

There wasn't anything to suggest an escape tunnel yet but Dandel had only searched one side of the room. He hastily started looking around for more, feeling every single part of the wall.

Heinrich

Heinrich couldn't say he was very happy to see the doors close. In fact, he felt quite unnerved. Scared, even - after all, they were now trapped in this room, and all the mages with their 'we only have so much air so don't yell' didn't help, considering Dandel proceeded to put his throat to work. The yeoman considered hitting the raging Dunmer on the head or something; maybe that would've calmed him down. Fortunatelly, it did not come to that, as when Elissandre suggested they start looking for something, a secret passage or just anything to help them get out of there, he calmed down somewhat, instead focusing on working rather than screaming. Good decission, that. 't least it leaves us more air... Or 't would, if some mages didn't play with 'em spells randomly. The way that half-necromancer mage proceeded to make the corpse dance didn't amuse Heinrich the slightest. 't least try not to look like a bloomin' freak...

Rolling his eyes, Heinrich turned to the wall and began looking for something that could help them escape. A loose brick, missing torch, anything. He didn't truly believe they'd find anything; but to try was far better than to just give up like that mage and start playing some freak games. 't least he'd try to be useful... Right now, the yeoman was horribly tempted to yell something along the lines of 'leave the damn corpse and help, we all know you're a freak!' However, that would've done even less to help than Dandel's yelling, thus he just swallowed whatever comments he had for the mage and continued reaching about for some clue of a secret passage.
