The trees...

I've just noticed yesterday that the leaves on the trees watch you as you walk past. Is this just paranoia or are they really 2D sprites that watch you at all times? The only other game that I know that does this with the trees is Far Cry 2.

They move. Pretty realistically I think. And the movement depends on the weather.

As far as watching you, I doubt it.

You're not related to Glathir are you :P

This is how Speed Tree works. There are two different trees in the game: 3D and 2D. You see 3D trees in the five cells immediately surrounding your character (on default settings). Outside that range (in the LOD range) SpeedTree switches to 2D. 2D tress are flat and they rotate in order to stay perpendicular to the player.

No, but there are similar creatures called Gnarls in the Shivering Isles.

To me it seems every objcect has 2D models. I've chosen lower settings ot keep performance up, and i swear even pots have 2D sprites in the distance.

The trees don′t watch you, but the stone walls do (as mentioned before) :)

Beware! They are actually Gnarls that have come from the Shivering Isles! They're just waiting for the right moment to strike. Beware...

Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

Into the trees.....

The trees are an example of a clever approach to getting random detail onto a scene without bogging down the hardware. The tree structure is 3D but the groups of leaves are sprites. Unless you are simply intrigued by the underlying technology, it doesn't do to look too close. The graphics technology is there to create true 3D trees but you would probably get frame rates similar to a slide show. I think the game's solution is a brilliant trade-off.
