About to Order Morrowind, But I Have Some Questions First...

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:54 am

Hi there, I've loved both Oblivion and Skyrim, and it sounds like Morrowind is a bit more (or a lot more) complex, which IMO is a good thing for an RPG. Anyways, I'm about to order it, but I've got some questions about it first:

1. Will GOTY edition run on Windows 7 right out of the box?
2. I'm primarily a console gamer, and basically have no experience with playing First Person Action/RPG games on computers, and the few games that I have played on computer (not action-RPGs) hurt my hands due to the way the controllers are mapped to the keyboard, and how I am used to game controllers. Should I get the Xbox version to play on my 360, play it on my computer with a logitech controller, or play it with the keyboard and mouse?
3. What are some tips for a new player?

Thanks in advance!

It is not a complex game, per se but it takes a while to get used to it. Here's a comprehensive list of differences among the three games:http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Differences_Between_Morrowind,_Oblivion,_and_Skyrim

1. I haven't had much trouble to get it running on Windows 7 but if you do encounter issues refer to this http://www.gamesas.com/topic/781497-vistawindows-7-problems/.

2. I would suggest you use the keyboard and mouse. It gives you the flexibility to map your actions to different keys.

3. Ensure that you have at least one melee skill as major for your first playthrough as the game can be a bit harsh for new players.

Happy adventuring.

If you a buy physical copy of the game, you'll have to install all kind of patches til your game is up to date. Buying it on Steam (not that I like the idea mind you :)) will save you the trouble. Once the game installed, you'll only have to add the Morrowind code patch and the Morrowind Patch Project.

Not if you buy the GOTY version. It has all the official patches. I think it'd be hard to find a version that doesn't have them, as a matter of fact - Bethesda hasn't released any patches for Morrowind in years.

I have the goty version on cd; it's absolutely not updated. The latest version (Steam) is 1.6.1820; if I remember well.

I've checked for you, and the game tells me it's version v1.6.1820. The latest version of the executable ought to be installed when you install Bloodmoon.

hmm i dont think there was more then maby two patches i had to get last month fro a clean reinstall and im using original release morrowind. but you can use a logitech controller i have done it myself but i prefered keyboard, but i also started on keyboard for elder scrolls. it is tricky to get everything tuned to make the logitech to run like it should with controller but now more then id say three minutes of tweaking with in game axis sensitivity.

keyboard you can have easier time with. the hot keys, movement, ready weapon/ spell, run, crouch, consol cheat button, and third person/ first person view are all right there where you left hand will be and right to the mouse. it gives more room for control as a controller will eliminate some of this. namly hot keys as logitech has problems with the directional pads going out first. and you would have to get used to the joysticks being used to move as the mouse would for spell selection and equipment ect form menus. which for me was a breaking point.

as for starting out biggest point is go slow. you wont be able to kill alot of things from the get go. talk to everybody, stick with skills your good at the first time through. always carry some cure common disease potions or scrolls and some divine and almsivi scrolls, watch your fatigue, and make sure and pay attention to directions. there are no map guides like oblivion and skyrim.

It must be the latest release of the game then. What's the copyright year on the cover? Mine is 2003.

You've made me curious! My current install is from the 'PCGamer Presents' DVD, copyright 2006. Going to check my other discs as well.

RESULTS

* The Games Collection: TES III Morrowind [comes without the expansions], copyright 2002, published by Ubisoft: Morrowind installer identifies itself as The Elder Scrolls III MORROWIND - v1.2.0722. *

* Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, copyright 2003, published by Ubisoft: Bloodmoon installer identifies itself as The Elder Scrolls III - BLOODMOON - v1.6.1820.

* Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, copyright 2006, published by Ubisoft for PCGamer: identical; Bloodmoon installer identifies itself as The Elder Scrolls III - BLOODMOON - v1.6.1820.

* I am not sure a 1.6.1820 patch was ever released for non-expansion Morrowind; 1.2.0722 may simply be the most up-to-date version of the executable without Tribunal and Bloodmoon.
