I was at that site today and ive been there 100s of times but today out of nowhere this Sh!t installed on my computer corrupted the hell out of it, thank god for antivirus protection 2010 they would fix my problems for 50 bucks to activate the program it installed. Pure blackmail. I swear these guys broke some law im sure of it, i guess they figure no one will take them to court over it so they can get away with it.. i fixed it but had to reset windows and reinstall everything. Say what you like but fallout 3 nexus the place every one DL thier fallout mods from, thats where i got it. I didnt do a thing, never clicked any off thier crappy adds or anything, it just randomly installed its self on my computer. I kinda always knew i was taking a risk going to a site like that to DL stuff every one shares, i guess now that feeling has been made real.

It was likely one of their ads that installed the virus, not the site itself. Try to take more care with your system to make sure it's protected from these kinds of threats. If your computer were fully up-to-date then this wouldn't have happened.

Yes, I know you said you didn't click on any ads. That doesn't matter, it can still come from an ad.

"I kinda always knew i was taking a risk going to a site like that to DL stuff every one shares, i guess now that feeling has been made real." Give it a rest, it's not the site's fault, it's your own fault for not caring enough to prevent it.

This is why having adblocking scripts and the like help, and it also helps to run from a whitelist you set yourself.

Nexus, as good as it is, is not on my whitelist and thus is not completely loaded on my end. Even then, I keep a close eye on what comes in from any website, even my own ISP's website.

I was at Fallout 3 Nexus twice today and had no malware ambush as described by the OP, but then I have my firewall set to deny any download without my express authorization.

The OP seems positive of the source of his troubles, but there was a warning just 2 days ago that accounts with hotmail, gmail, yahoo, aol and other providers had been compromised. I changed my passwords and personal questions after that warning. There is another possible route of infection.

If you blame the Nexus for the malware, decide not to visit the site anymore, and that makes you feel secure... it shouldn't. If you think that not clicking on adverts makes you secure... it shouldn't.

I never heard of antivirus protection 2010. They charged you $50 and you still had to reinstall everything? Sounds like the second attack, or maybe a continuation of the first. Investing in better prophylactics sounds cheaper and healthier.

I knew I wasnt going to get any sympathy here. Say what you like, hell blame me its my fault like the second poster said, utter ignorance btw. Never the less any site that would permit such an add in the first place says a lot about it self. If it pays dam the rest.

FYI...

antivirus protection 2010 is a virus... They come out with one every year. My sister accidentally got the 2009 virus.

In this day and age, anti-virus protection is a no-brainer, and getting infected is, most of the time, the users fault. Intentional or not, the user was the one that initated the download of the virus.

Suggestions for free, good, anti-virus:

In fact their anti virus software that installed on my computer was so good I could not even uninstall it with out buying the rights to it.

for starters, you actually have to do something for a program t obe installed onto your computer. unlike what many think, virus cannot just install programs onto your computer without you donig something. Though doing something can be as easy as clicking on a link/ad.

And FYI, a quick google search will show you that antivirus protection 2010 is a fake anti-virus that is just out to get your money.

EDIT: The reason they arent sued....its the internet not a country, that makes it really hard.

I'd bet that you already had it on your computer, it just happened to do something new or kick in when you were on the site by coincidence. If you didn't even know that antivirus 2010 wasn't legit, then perhaps you aren't as internet savy as you'd like to believe. I'd suggest you

1. Do some actual research and use a real antivirus program.
2. Use Firefox, and download Adblock and NoScript.
3. Learn how to use all of the above.

I've been going to the Nexus for years and years, counting from before when it was the Source and I've never, ever, even almost gotten any malware from it. On the off chance that the site was compromised, and you did in fact get some kind of virus from it, it is due to you not having taken proper precautions, and could have happened on any site on the internet. It's a simple fact, I'm sorry. The amount of damage a virus can do without you being fooled into clicking on things is extraordinarily minimal, unless you have some very strange settings allowing full on internet [censored] or already are infected.

It is a common misunderstanding that clicking establishes a connection. This is wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to begin. Simple fact is, things are downloaded and uploaded to/from your computer all the time, even when no browser is open. You can get infected just by having an active connection to the internet. People thing they "they" get the virus, but they don't think that the viruses are also looking for you. That is correct. There are many viruses that actively seek out vulnerable computers to infect.

Agreed Econite.

I think it likely that this malware was picked up and installed elswhere. Whenever I manage to get myself an infection, it manifests itself early on by randomly taking me away from the web page I`m looking at to some ad site where im told I have a virus....... I`d bet my house that the ads on FO3Nexus arent to blame.

I think this will probably come across as insulting, its not meant to I promise, but, you were naieve enough about PC virus`s to get ransomed by one, dont you think its quite likely that you dont know enough about virus to blame a well established site with no history of virus`?

I symphathise with your plight, but Safe mode is your friend. Google your virus, it will likely tell you to start up in safe mode and delete anything to do with that virus, then install AVG Free. I use that virus software and have been virus free for over 18 months now.

Good luck getting rid of your virus, although, if you know how, a format and reinstall of windows is sometimes the quicker option. BUt not necessarily the best.

Take care

Unfortunate if an ad on a fallout site triggered that attack against someone's PC. Some links off of Google tried to do that to me recently. I did not click "OK" or, in fact, "Cancel" on ANY window it presented, and it was unable to install anything on my PC.

You can't click OK on any parts of those sorts of attacks. To be sure you stop it when it happens, you can ctrl-alt-del and use the menu to "end program" on your browser.

Apparently it tricked you into allowing this "antivirus protection 2010" virus-like thing. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081005164440AAzjSap . svcks.

One general suggestion - use firefox with the noscript plugin - so you can see where the scripts are coming from and choose not to run them. Awhile back the pcgamer podcast site had a similar problem.

I paid for a membership on fallout nexus, because they are awesome and pretty much an indespensible part of the fallout/oblivion community.

I have known at least 2 people who have been snookered by various antiprotection popups.

Closed for ranting, flaming, censor avoidance.

I have never had a problem with either of the Nexus sites, with 100s of downloads.
