1. Its not a system you just "hack" into. They already have these in humvees anyways (and they fail all the time).
2. The same "systems" in the humvees crash and fail all the time, so this crashing wouldn't be an issue.
3. It would be easier to just detect the wearer rather than the piece of equipment on his arm.

Guess you are rigth. Perhaps I am getting old and envy new soldiers and theire toys.
20 years ago when I, as all young men, was drafted, I was given a 9mm SMG model 46.
It was a solid piece of machinery. So solid that you could cave someones helmet with it if you where out of ammo!
Now its all coalfiber, plastics and 5.5 mm kids stuff.
