there is enough space left to install the expansions yet I get a message telling me I need a hard drive to play them.

seems the 4gb unit doesn't use a hard drive at all.

will they work if I download them from the marketplace?

I believe the 4GB version is a just a small flash memory chip on the motherboard itself. Its not an actual HDD.
