Choppy videos, gameplay is fine

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:34 am

I just installed Oblivion for the 1st time and have read through the FAQs. I have a problem with the videos in Oblivion. For example, the startup logos, and introduction video freeze then unfreeze every 2 secs. When I get into the game and run around, the game runs fine. Does anyone know how to fix this? Here are my specs:

Probably a codec issue.

You could try http://nightmare2013.brashendeavors.net/...... Keep in mind, this utility will break any application that specifically depends on codecs that it installs, reinstalling whatever app should fix that though. (and possibly break oblivion again.)

Thanks. I'm going through the utility now, but it asked which version of XP do you have, SP1 or SP2 (must be an old utility) as I have SP3 installed. Should I just choose SP2?

Well I tried it anyway using the SP2 option (seems to use wmp9 in the reg) and the problem persists. Very strange. I'm sure my system should be capable of playing this. :brokencomputer:

I think you need to update Windows Media Player to 10/11 version, but first I suggest that you use http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-cleaner/download/ to correct the registry before updating. Reboot your PC if you didn't have done that yet.

If this didn't fix the game video I would recommend that run http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/. :user:

Here's what I recommended to the last person who had issues of a possibly similar nature (and it worked, for them!) - it's also what I used, and it worked for me...

K-Lite Codec Pack (Mega) - once it's installed, run "Quick Codec Config", choosing "detect broken codecs and filters".

That was for a music-related problem, for the other forum member, but for me, it solved a video-related one. So, it might work. Hope so! :)

The only other thing I can think of that might be worth trying is the latest redist for DirectX 9: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d&displaylang=en (assuming you haven't already installed that, natch).

edit: +1 on defragging the HDD. Even just the Oblivion directory, could help a bit. For dealing with left-behind messes and registry clutter, I thoroughly recommend CCleaner.

Still no luck. I always keep my drives clean using CCleaner and Defraggler. I tried the suggestions above with no luck, but I do have an earlier version of DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). This is because I also play Morrowind with MGE, which I believe requires that specific build of DirectX. I don't really want to mess up MGE but I guess I can try to get the latest and see if that works. If not, I hope I can roll it back if I need to.

I'll also note that this could be an audio problem maybe, not sure, but I was able to play Oblivion's bik video files in The KM Player without any stutter. And if I disable audio in Oblivion.ini, the videos play fine (without audio of course).

Hm. I believe that DirectX is all-inclusive (up to and including that specific date, that is). Could be wrong though - but yes, you can certainly uninstall any update, and install or reinstall any other, at any time. Any your OS will support, I mean. ;)

Interesting, re: audio in particular. Um... have you made sure your sound card / onboard audio drivers are up to date? Also, which is it, and what's the manufacturer/model?

I'll go hunting, see if my Google-fu turns up anything...

I tried updating DirextX and I have an old Soundblaster Live sound card. I was using the KX drivers for it as i do audio production, and have never had any problem using it with games. I did however remove those drivers and install the latest from Creative Labs, but the problem still persists! I don't know what else to try really. :(
