Mods and Money

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:34 pm

Basically, I'm going on a school trip overseas next year, and I'm in need of some money. Thinking it over, I realized that mods may have some potential for money-making. I realize it is illegal to sell a mod, but how about indirect methods of generating money from mods? Is selling the bandwidth required to download a mod illegal? How about advertising, or requesting donations? Selling the textures for a mod?

Basically, I just want to know where the boundaries lie. Has Bethesda made an official statement regarding this issue, and if so, where?

Thanks :)

Bethesda owns all content created with the GECK so you're not allowed to sell the mods. But it's okay to add a donation button to your website or something like that.

That's the really simple answer anyway, I'm sure someone else can go into more details...

Ah if I could sell Kragenir's Death Quest for ?1,- per download...

But couldn't you legally distribute the mod for free, but sell the textures required to make it run? (I'm not intending to do this, just thinking it through, don't lynch me :P)

EDIT: *Awaits Dogsbody's comprehensive answer*

If a pay-for or donation scheme goes beyond raising funds to cover the cost of operating a download site, then it's prohibited.

So, in short, no.
