Offset Engine?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:27 am

Does anyone here remember the highly anticipated Offset software engine that was greatly presented about a year ago? www.offset.com
Sadly this very cool and advanced physics, and world building engine was canceled about mid summer this year, bought out by Intel.

Now, consider this for a moment...

Could Intel have known that Bethesda was going to be looking for a new engine for their upcoming game, and bought the software from Offset, just to broker it to Beth?
I know Beth usually uses their own software exclusively, but could it be possible that TESV will be using the Offset Engine?

If so, I would be pretty darn happy, The engine is extremely powerful, and is modder friendly, so it checks off everything on my list.

Yep they have designed a new engine from the ground up focusing on gameplay and stability :)

you mean project offset? I'm pretty sure Intel fired the guys..."Intel canceled the game in mid 2010, citing "recent changes in our product roadmap" (possibly meaning the failure of Larrabee as a consumer product).[6] The founders of Offset Software have moved to a new game development studio named Fractiv LLC." from the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offset_Software

The Offset engine was made for a linear FPS. I don't think so.

Oddly Intel said something to the effect that they were using it for 'testing purposes' to better understand game developer needs. It would be a shame to throw good code away.

http://fractiv.com/ this is from their website....
"Our previous company, Offset Software, was purchased by Intel in 2008. Our labor of love was Project Offset and the game engine that went with it. As many of our fans already know, Project Offset was cancelled. The graphics hardware it was being designed for did not ship and our game was a casualty of this.

The IP and Engine are property of Intel so its future is out of our hands. We have tried working with Intel to obtain the rights and there are some good people there who have made some effort to help us, but without success.

We would like to thank all those who supported us and the project. We learned some good lessons along the way and met some incredibly talented people who we are fortunate enough to call our friends."

Statement from Intel:

"Intel purchased Offset Software to improve our game development knowledge-base and to further Intel's visual computing technology development expertise, helping the company offer robust products, support, and tools to customers. With the recent changes in our product roadmap, some of the resources and technologies from the acquisition are being re-applied to help support new graphics related projects. Additionally, other Offset Software team members have moved onto other external projects outside the company."

An engine doesn't preclude the developers to one genre of games. The same engine can be used to make an rts.

Sounds like funny business.
