Daggerfall: Casting Spells

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:34 am

Real dumb question here: how do I cast spells? It's been years, I can't remember how to cast "on touch" spells. It says "click to cast," but click what? My memory suggests the left mouse button, but that doesn't seem to be doing it.

Are there issues with casting spells is Dosbox on Linux, perhaps?

Select it from your spell menu and left click should do it.

No issues on linux. Just remember that you actually have to have a target to cast a touch spell; it simply won't go off at all unless there's somebody to touch. If you're in mouse view mode, you may have to hit the spacebar or whatever you have mapped to "activate center object".

Not necessarily, you just have to re-enable the cursor and click like if you were using the Arena-style interface. You can bind that somewhere in controls, I have mine for pressing the scroll wheel.

Oh yeah, re-enable cursor! And I'm willing to bet it didn't help I was testing it first on a bat. svckers are hard to target, IIRC.

Yeah, I'm using a highly custom control scheme: mouse view mode with wasd movement.

Me too! I have mine very similar to an FPS setup.

Aaaand... it's up and running! Yup, my problem was I was trying to spacebar-target a bat, which usually works, but I just wasn't pointing it right. This is awesome. It's great to get back into this game. Got me an Argonian battlemage (Argonian because I like Argonians, Battlemage because that's what the questions gave me... any class will do, really), killed a "werewolf" for the Fighters Guild (actually a bear), and just joined the Mages Guild (both in Gothway Garden). It's been entirely too long. My only complaint is that the music is kind of choppy, but that's probably because my computer is just barely powerful enough to dosbox it.
