Possible Wip - Animated Weapons/ Armor

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:53 am

Working a lot with texture animation in the last days, I came up with the idea to make a test and see, if same kinda texture animation, which was used for the vanilla waterfall meshes would work on weaponry and armor as well. I can say now it does and I recently tested my first animated sword ingame. I gave it just a quick texture and the animation's speed isn't tweaked yet.

I'm not that big fan of modeling weapons and armor, but I think I'll create a few unique pieces though. Imagine a new daedric armor with runes and veins of liquid lava flowing throw the metal plates. Somewhat like that is what comes to my mind spontaniously!!! :)

Here's some short youtube video of the first test on a claymore I once made:

PS: Quality of the vid isn't yet that good, because it is still worked on!!!

To be honest, animation isnt perfect, but, well, I like the way you do it. I'll be waitng for new video and then for release, looks nice, TD.

If I remember there are few weapons that have texture animation, one had thunder textures (looking like the head of the mace is electrified) and one was fully animated (leaves were flying all around the blade).

But I'm looking forward to what you'll make, some of your models were plain craziness. And I really wanna see what kind of armor will you have in work.

Yeah, I have seen some of those animations, but can't remember which author it was from, can you?! The leave animation IIRC is simply particles with leave textures/ meshes, not that difficult. There is even a description on Amael's modding site how to do this:

http://miolnir.co.uk/amael/

I was watching "Spawn" the movie and the animated series recently and I thought to myself it would be nice to have some kind of armor similar to that. Especially that shroud he has. I will try to make an animated one, which is synchronised with the different idles, for example if you jump, the shroud forms up like wings or while sneaking covers you like some kinda shield. I'll try that with different shapekeys. I was also thinking of an armor made with shapekeys and keyframe animation, which is made of dozens of single parts and puzzles together as soon as you equip it, but I havent figured out how to get around the problem that the bodypart gets replaced as soon as you put on a piece of armor. I'll have some brainstorming!!!;)

Unfortunately no idea for one with leaves, sorry. I've been trying to find it myself, but never did. If I remember correctly, they were part a some very large weapon compilation (not HELLUVA)
However, I think there is one mace that changes textures of electricity that is part of HELLUVA, it's a mace.

EDIT:
yes, it's definitively HELLUVA, 1 handed mace if you're interested in downloading http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6589
For easy locating, if you do download here is the pic http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/fms/Image.php?id=67493

These are all particle animations, no animated textures. Particles just need to be made in max or pasted into the weapon nif in NifSkope, no big deal. I made myself a bunch of those weapons a while ago!!! :)

What you think of somethink like this as an armor. It is an early ZBrush work of mine. I could make a nice retopo or even something completely new with a similar demonic/ daedric/ alien style:

These are the weapons I am sure yall are talking about. Starboi aka Earrindo made them. He has lots of good examples of particles put to some incredible use.

I think http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=285 uses animated textures.

Anyways, on-topic now ^_^ I really like the claymore in your video, and the idea of a daedric armor with animated lava textures sounds very cool! Are you making animated glow map textures as well?
As for the zbrush creation you posted screenshots of, I would love to see an armor with the same "demonic" feeling!

@AOF: These are indeed some cool weapons and as far as I can say it's all made with particles only, no animated textures. This kind of weapons are not that difficult to produce.

@Mandamus: This one could be a real animated texture, will downlaod it and have a look at it. I might make some weaopons/ armor with animated glowmaps, but I first have to see how difficult it is to do with Blender and Nifskope. Don't know wether the glowmap will follow the animation of the UV-map automatically. I could also do it with 3ds max, but I just learned the very basics of that program.

The tests that I made yesterday were not that satisfying. the gameengine seems to render the animation in a wicked way. In Blender I made the texture move along the y-axis in only one direction, but ingame it seems to change it's direction randomly. Same is with speed of animation, sometimes it is slow, then it speeds up all of a sudden. Maybe it has also something to do with fps. Maybe in areas with many meshes and other animations rendering gets slowed down.

I'll have to make further tests on this!!! ;)

I think I'll make a new armor and do the base design in zBrush. Then I make retopos of the single parts and use the ambient occlusion map and bump map from the highpoly model for Morrowind. Too bad normal maps don't work (yet)!!! :(

Rohrschach's mask shouldn't be that difficult, though it might be a huge fps killer. Alphax from NifTools just came up with a watermesh combining NiFlipController animation plus NiUVController animation. That mask should work with same technique. Someone would have to make all that inkblot textures though!!! :)

Well, I'm not that big fan of that movie, if anyone else wants to have a try check out this thread. Alphax posted a link to a sample mesh featuring this kinda animation!!! ;)

At the moment I'm working full speed on my bunny-mod, had no time left to do further tests. But this WIP is just paused, not over!!! ;)
