cheatmode 1

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:19 am

Right now, I'm looking for Lord K'avar in Castle Wayrest. I hate Castle Wayrest. It's the most difficult labyrinth I've ever encountered in the game, and I've reached the point where I've given up looking for him.

So I've opened up z.cfg and added the line "cheatmode 1". But for some reason, it isn't registering; none of the cheats are working. (The one I want is the bracket cheat.)

I used to do this back in the day, so I thought I knew how to do this. Does anyone have any ideas? Alternately, are there any other ways to get K'avar's men from coming after me? I'm ready to just eat the quest, but the attacks are getting annoying.

EDIT: Well, while waiting for a response, I've done a little more exploring. I'm well aware of that "window" thing... and can't help but wonder if there's a "legitimate" way past it. I know my way (being a battlemage, I'll just voidwalk past it), but has anyone managed to get through it? I'm sure you need to get through it, as I've never managed to find the painting without cheating before, and I've, up 'till today, never found a way past it. (Didn't consider voidwalking back in the day.)

EDIT2: Well, I've found the painting chamber. So at least i know basically how to get to it when the time comes. Didn't find K'avar, of course. Will probably look some more later. Castle Wayrest is turning into a three-day dungeon. Astounding.

You may have difficulty with this as Lord K'Var is in Castle Sentinel :)
From the entrance chamber, take the first door on the right and follow it to the dude on the table.

As for the window, Dr Memory has assured me you can duck and squeeze through it. Me, I think he's nuts; I always end up sending myself into the void, so I assume that's what the game wants me to do.

Duck, then walk into it. You will climb (whilst still ducked) and get in. If you're lucky you'll dismount in the opening. Usually though, you won't climb high enough to be able to fit in. Get away from the window and try again...and again...and again.

No, no, Queen Athkori of Sentinel was quite clear on that point; you must be thinking of someone else. I got the treasonous note to her (this is that monstrosity of a questline that begins as a Fighters' Guild quest), but declined to pursue K'avar further. He escaped their clutches, and I arrived at Castle Sentinel yet again in response to a letter. She then told me he'd turned up in the court of Wayrest, of all places. She's pretty sure they're not stupid enough to back his claim openly, but she's quite certain he's hiding out in the dungeons of Wayrest. It's quite possible; I've explored all I could find so far, but I'm certain there's yet more to explore.

Anyway, what about cheatmode? Has anybody else had any trouble getting that working on modern configurations? Hmm... how about my z.cfg:

Uh... never mind. Apparently, I did something wrong last time I tried that. I had removed cheatmode on the outside chance it suddenly activates and I end up screwing up my character... but having added it back just so I could show you what it looked like, I figured I'd test it one more time before embarrassing myself. Lucky I did. It works this time.

And I found him. It turns out there's a pit in a room that I had to jump into to find him. I levitated out, and smacked my forehead. I'd walked right past it, figuring it lead down to another area I could just walk to. All the other pits seem to.

OMG, it was right near the throne room. I feel like an idiot.

Oh, this was some sort of quest I've never heard of. Lord K'Var is normally found where I stated earlier, in Castle Sentinel. I thought you were just looking for him.

I'm pretty sure Lord K'var and Lord K'avar are two different people.

That is correct in that Lord K'var does not exist. K'avar is who I meant, you'll just have to excuse the spelling error ;)

Heh. StoneFrog has it. It's not easy, and I do get sent into The Void more often than I get through it. But with the nutso persistence that also allows me to train all my magic up to 100% and achieve 31 HP/level, it is possible. (IIRC you can't be running.)

I do wonder if they meant for it to be possible (I suspect so) and if so, whether they meant for it to be so freaking hard (I suspect not).

Climbing through that darn window is one of the hardest deeds to accomplish in DF. Having an insanely high climbing skill helps. I also once managed to duck and then levitate through, but I suspect that was just dumb luck (somehow connected to the law of large numbers). :goodjob:

Heh, the levitation thing was the first thing I tried, but it seems that your "ceiling" is the same regardless of whether you're standing or crouching... meaning you can't actually levitate high enough to clear the feet. I did managed jump and duck once, but that was so ridiculously hard I can't imagine that was the intended method of bypassing the window. It makes me wonder if there's supposed to be a teleporter leading to the other side, with the window there to show you that there's yet more to the dungeon you've not yet seen.

As I hated going around looking for that accursed painting (not to mention the fact my Recall anchor expired by the time I got it), I really did not spend more time needed in there than I had to. The only way through I know of is through the window of doom.
