The Future of Dramatic Moments and Cutscenes

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 4:52 pm

Let's all face it, the dramatic moments and cutscenes in Elder Scrolls game to turn out to well. They get the point across, and add action nonetheless, but the experience doesn't match the rest of the game.

I'm not saying the game fails to deliver completely when there's a cutscene/big moment in a quest or such, but it doesn't match the rest. You're fighting you're way through a dungeon, delivering spells back and forth from one hand, and slashing the enemy with your enchanted blade from the other. You try and book it to the next room, but you're faced with a swinging trap. You barely pass, and finally make it to the object you have to recover. The mage who you've befriended who was looking for it approaches the object, takes, it and thanks you gratefully. Now you've got to get him out of there so you can recieve your pay. Then, out of nowhere, a great necromancer appears and unleashes his anger by collapsing the dungeon.

Then you're faced with a painful cutscene.

The dungeon begins to collapse, with the mage exclaiming in the most calmest voice you've ever heard - "Run, we must get out of here! I should've know that evil necromancer would interupt us!"

So you back out of the chat screen, waiting for him to take off like you'd expect someone to. But alas, no. He just calmly waits 5 seconds, screams "run", and goes for a jog in the park. Now that's what I call dramatic. Atleast it's better than those horrible Call of Duty moments where your character looks at his hands back and forth like he just tripped in dog S**t.

Don't get me wrong, the Elder Scrolls game have lore and dramatism like no other, but their cutscenes could have more effort put into them. Easily.

What's your take on the cutscenes in TES? Favorite? Worst? And most importantly - do you think they should be improved in future games?

I don't think there should be anymore focus on cutscenes. Make the game as uncinematic as possible. Work on creating interesting RPG systems and faction politics etc. You're asking them to go in the direction of Uncharted when that is the exact opposite route it should take.

I didn't mean it like there should be a placement of a cinematic feeling, I'm just saying, there could easily be a more smoother flow when it comes to those moments. You've got a good point, though.

Yea I mean their must be ways to make some moments much more interesting and dramatic but I think there's a danger in making it far too scripted if they go in a certain direction. Fallout New Vegas had a bunch of awesome moments where you just like "OMG" and it made you think about the depravity of humanity. For example, when boone asks you to find out what happened to his wife and when you do its just crushing what someone would do for bottlecaps of all things.

I never feel any drama in TES games.

One is because the facial expressions and the animations of the characters that can show emotion is very limited, and another is because the voice actors show as much emotion as a rock. Not necessarily because of a lack of cutscenes.

Honestly, if they could use subtle environments to lead your eye where they want it to go and fix the two issues above, then it could work.
