Well i just got the collection

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:36 am

Hey all i just found the fallout collection(finally) and bought it for like ?3.50. Anyway i havent delved into the games that much yet as i have been busy but what i have played seems really good. I have tried Fallout 1 and 2 because i couldnt resist once i had installed them and so far i have played the second one slightly more. I just wondered whether theres any key hints or tips to keep in mind when I'm playing. I dont need spoilers or things like that but just some good things to do for a beginner to the game. The thing i have really loved so far(on number 2 anyway) has been that when i see the tribesman twirling his spear, he can teach me how to use mine better. And when i speak to someone who's name is "stronghand" he can teach me about unarmed combat.
So yeah I'm just saying that these games really are great so far and is there anything i should bear in mind while I'm playing(preferably on number 2 but tips for the 1st will be helpful too ;) .Thanks everybody

I don't think there's much I can tell you to be honest, I don't want to spoil or guide you :P

I'd say press F1 in-game if you have any queries about point and click control and features. And you should play and complete FO1 first as FO2 has many references to FO1s story. But if you don't mind so much about that then I wouldn't worry.

Thanks =] I'll probably play them both a bit more and follow whichever character i get into most.Even though I'm used to things like oblivion and Fallout 3, kinda newer games I'm really enjoying these due to them feeling so much more..traditional?
One other thing, what happens if I dont get the water chip within 100 days?Just because I can take a while to get round to main stories on these games as i explore too much :s.
Thanks

Traditional would be a fair word to use :P Call me old fashioned, but games of decades past have a greater ratio of lasting appeal than most modern games, I find.

You have 150 days overall to find the chip, the game will end if you don't find it by then, although 150 days can last quite a while anyway :) There's a way to extend this limit to 250 days if you make a deal with a certain merchant group at the Hub, but this has a side-effect, I don't see it as a downside personally, because I've rarely clocked up 400+ days on FO1s world map, take from that what you will, but I shall say no more :P

Also, if you find the world map travel in your games is a little too quick, it's because of the way the original Fallouts work on higher-end systems, there are patches you can install to fix this problem, and it can enhance your game by giving you a greater chance for random encounters on your travels :) Refer to the sticky at the top of this board, it contains some mods/patches that most of us fans of the originals would definitely recommend :) I'd advise you finish your current playthrough if you're quite far into it, because some patches/mods make previous save files redundant.

Wow thanks, i see what you mean about older games as I used to watch my dad play the old doom games and i have been playing them too since i started gaming.
Also thanks for the info on the chip its just that i wanted to be sure about what happened and I'll have to check out the hub =]
I think I'll play the games through without mods first and then i can decide what feel they need but thanks for the tips on that too.
I really am enjoying these games so far which is surprising as Fallout 3 was the first in the series that i played and in my opinion they are completely different.

Because Fallout 3 is a "stupid" spin-off(these words came from the lore expert himself, not mine). oh, make sure you don't read any guide about this game, except if you like spoilers :P (or if you really-really stuck)

John in Klamath will offer to teach you magic spells.

To keep in mind:
  • Everything you can put your mouse over has some kind of description. Keep an eye out for interesting ones.
  • What you see in those descriptions can sometimes change based on character development.
  • In combat, don't just click, and wait to click again... Once you know the rules, apply them to your opponents to know their limitations (or potential :o ).
  • Fight dirty ~ Occasionally you can get short term allies that will fight against a common enemy.
    {see if you can make yours a common enemy :evil:}
  • In dialog, think carefully about your possible responses (which can change with character development)

The Collection doesn't come with a manual, so it can be a bit daunting to the first-time player. Here are some advice-sites my friend linked me to:

http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout.html
http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html

You might find them useful in supplement to the other links provided. :)

(Yes, I have just realised they're the same ones as are in the pinned topic. Doh!)

Try to play it at least once without a walkthrough, as well.

Assuming your purchase comes with a disk. You can purchase downloadable content.

You can do anything with a save file and a hex editor, flag yourself constantly sneaking for instance, even flag yourself dead (un-dead). My point is, it doesn't really matter how you go about it, power expoits are power expliots, and they're boring :P

The version I bought had just the disc and the standard plastic case - all 3 games on one disc, no other stuff with it. I spent about twelve minutes just trying to work out how to 'rest' outside Junktown!

(I asked Kate in the end - she sent me the links so I'd stop bugging her with questions. :hehe: )

Thanks for the manual links, Gizmo - so if your version didn't come with the manual either, at least we can read it.

Now I'll be able to grasp some of the basics hehe as it is confusing.
It seems that I'm going to play through number 2 first though its only because thats the one i have got into the most.
Thanks again =]

It would have been best to post your pwn thread, so people can be aware of your query immediately, but since you're here, http://translate.google.ru/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.labo-asso.com%2Fphp%2Foutils%2Ffallout.php&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

You can also download Killaps FO2 patch (at NMA-Fallout.com) and use the Ddraw.dll for Fallout 1 ~and it bypasses the problem.
