TES Computer Threat?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:55 am

Recently, Norton Antivirus was installed on my mom's computer, which she is just now letting me use again(she thought my video games gave her computer a virus). I'm trying to convince her that computer games don't come with viruses so she will let me download Arena and Daggerfall and so she will buy Morrowind for me and let me play it on her computer. The problem is that Norton claims that TES official site is a threat to this computer. That doesn't help me. Is there an explanation for this, other than the universe trying to prevent me from playing computer games? Also, something called jucheck.exe is flashing at the bottom of the computer screen and asking for my permission for something. Does anyone know what that is? Knowing my luck, it could be anything negative.

What specifically is Norton saying about the site? You could show her the http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/elderscrolls.com of www.elderscrolls.com, which finds no problems, tested all on-site downloads and found no issues (that includes the Arena and Daggerfall downloads), and tested all links and found no issues either. You might also suggest that, if professional computer games (which are multi-million-dollar business investments) actually came with viruses, they would cease to make money and the industry would not exist as a business.

The only possible thing I'd hesitate on is that users do mention when the forum was hacked way back when (despite that it hasn't happened since 2006), and that might turn into ammunition against the forums. But still, McAfee is just as reputable (if not moreso, IMO) as Norton regarding computer protection and internet security, and they give elderscrolls.com a clean bill of health.

From what I can tell, jucheck.exe is probably a Java Updater for your computer's Java library (not connected to gaming), in which case it's fine. But I'd scan just in case.

Norton claims the site has a drive-by download. If Norton says it's dangerous, than my mom will believe it is dangerous. She claims to know more about computers than me, so nothing I say matters. Still, if Norton is wrong, then how am I to trust it as an antivirus? If it is right, then I am still upset due to the possibility that there might be an unsafe download on that site.

hmm... If you throw your arguements, letting her win each time, you'll have Morrowind in two weeks. You need to be graceful about loosing your arguements, too. Moms also like it when you do stuff, without being told.

Ok, http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?url=www.elderscrolls.com&x=0&y=0 Fortunately, there are some distinctions to be made here regarding the official TES site and the Construction Set Wiki. Unfortunately for you, I don't know if your parent will readily make that distinction.

The questionable file cannot be accessed via the TES main page; it requires you to go into the Construction Set Wiki, which like any Wiki can be edited by anyone. And even then, I haven't been able to actually find a link on the CS Wiki to the questionable image file. Guessing from the URL that Norton's site provides, it's possible that the image is stored only in Bethesda's archives and is not directly accessible from the main CS page.

So, important things to pull away:
The "threat" is located at cs.elderscrolls.com (the user wiki), not on the main page (www.elderscrolls.com).
Since you're not playing Oblivion on a PC and therefore have no use for the CS wiki, it's likely you will never go there.
The actual file in question doesn't appear to have a direct link to it on the page and likely exists in archive only.

EDIT: Scratch that, found a link to the OBSE_CS_Shortcut.png image via the OBSE category. Downloaded and scanned via MalwareBytes; completely clean. I guess that supports the idea that the suspect file was replaced with a clean one, and the suspect file now exists in archive only.

Thank you. If only Norton didn't have that sign warning about that download. It's good to know that TES site is safe, but my mom will not make that distinction. I'm going to have to go without Arena and Daggerfall until my birthday in October(when I might finally be able to get my first computer). I might still be able to convince my mom to let me play Morrowind on her computer(considering it's not a download), but I think I might just go play the console versions of Oblivion and Morrowind instead. Trying to play computer games is a frustrating experience for me due to all the problems that appear only when I'm about to start playing, and I don't own the computer.

I would consider buying vanilla Morrowind and goty Morrowind, if you're going with the console version. Play with the orgional, until you want to start Tribunal. Once you do, pop in the goty disk. You can thank me later, for not being assassinated every time you sleep or rest.

I know about the assassinations, and I have the console version, but not the PC version. My mom's new laptop is capable of running Morrowind(unlike previous computers in my house), but she won't let me play Morrowind on her laptop. I haven't done anything in Morrowind yet(still much left to do in Oblivion, even after having it for a year and a half), but I read about the assassinations on the UESP. I know a lot about Morrowind, but I haven't even played it yet. When TES V comes out, I have to forbid myself from going near that wiki. I like to read about TES games because they are interesting, but when I do that, I ruin the games by spoiling everything.

I've deleted a post. Sarcasm posted in the guise of "advice" is unwelcome.

You've been given a good explanation, and it's beyond the powers of the forum members to convince your mother. That's up to you.

Download a separate Anti-virus program and check to see if it still reports this site as a threat.

I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It's free.

This reminds me of the old days when I used to play on a very old and crappy computer, it was very slow and would crash alot, and when I tell my father that I want to repair it he yells at me "It's all because of your games!". I could not convince him that it wasn't because of the games no matter how hard I try, so I just gave up on that :P. That's old hard-headed parents for you :).

Regarding anti-virus software, I am very satisfied with Kaspersky.

If I was you, I'd just buy the game, install it without shortcuts, and play it when your mom isn't looking. I know from experience you can't argue with parents like that. So the best way is to subvert them.

If your mother has Norton on her computer, she knows nothing of technology.

Norton is the LAST antivirus I would EVER tell ANYONE to use. Even if you ignore the bulk of the false-positives it gives the amount of system memory it takes up is almost as bad as a virus itself.

I highly suggest MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) or perhaps McAffee (which is not anywhere near as bad as Norton, but still pretty annoying)

Quoted for truth. Once upon a time Norton/Symantec was a good anti-virus app. That time has long passed. Having Norton is like having a virus. It is that bad. I concur with the people saying to get rid of it and use another solution, like Avast! or AVG, both of which have free versions.

I would have suggested those also, but since they are free I figured his mom would be like "Oh, they are probably viruses! Ewwww!"

Actually, she did have a free antivirus, but she decided to buy Norton.

Worst mistake ever :)

Seriously, my dad went over to fix my sisters computer this one time, and all he did was uninstall Norton and over HALF of her ram usage instantly went down and the computer was usable. I think it had like 2GB too...

Gotta chime in here...

I work in IT and I have to wholeheartedly agree with others here: drop Norton. For that matter, stay away from McAfee also. I like Kaperski and AVG okay. I really like VIPRE. It is very effective and has a tiny memory footprint.
