Does anyone else get in a rut with Modding?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:03 am

I find myself in a rut right now with Morrowind Modding, I find myself not really feeling like working on my WIPs lately, Has anyone else ever been through this?

You mean where all you ever do is open the CS and just look at it and do nothing then decide to check the forums? Then yes is your answer. :)

 Same here. Open up Nifskope, fiddle around a bit, then check forums. Open up Spreadsheet, look at tabs, enter a few numbers, then play video games.

So, yeah, I definitely have my productive days, and my non-productive days (weeks). Or months...

Unfortunately, I've many WiPz I can't do on my own and that require assistance. I end up dropping the ball on those and get distracted with WiPz I can do on my own.

Sigh - oh yes

Sometimes modding feels too much like work - especially when you're dealing with lots of files or dialogue trees - and if you havea big project sometimes the end seens months if not years away

Do you have much work to go on your WIPs?

When I've got into a rut I've tried gritting my teeth and carrying on regardless but somehow it's like there is a war is going on between the creative right hand side of my brain and the logical left

The left hand side of my brain keeps writing down lists of to do things on my mod and uses my concience to beat me up with if I miss a deadline - whereas the right hand side rebels against such structured monotony and says hey if you won't just let me do what I want then I'm shutting down and going to the forums to look at the screenshot thread or the MGE thread to get inspired again :)

In the end modding is just a hobby right? And hobbies are all about the fun of learning new things and becoming skillful - over Xmas when I was in a modding rut I went and played tennis nearly every day for a month - which was way more healthy and I developed a wicked backhand shot - though I'm thinking of modding my racquet now :)

We leeches need you people.

Remember, that for every ten threads I create about how I managed to destroy my copy of Morrowind (or Oblivion -- especially Oblivion), I am playing around 26 mods. That's right, a crash-tastic 255. But I gladly switch them out for the latest fix of what you fine folks have to offer.

Seriously, keep up the good work. Don't let the man get you down.

You people are why we keep playing these games. You people are amazing.

I tend to disappear for months at a time, but I always come back. This time I kind of forced myself to come back, but I'm fully immersed in what I'm doing once again. Usually my hiatuses last more than half a year.

In one right now. I have so many ideas running through my head right now, that I have a hard time focusing on one at a time. Most of the time instead, I'll just pull up the CS and stare at it for a while.

Sadly, yes. When I find myself just cranking through a design then I tend to stop for a while and go back to IRL as I've found that things created when you really don't feel like creating anything a sub-par. Except if you need to create standard things and a lot of them then I think those times are the best to use for that purpose. My policy is if I don't feel good about what I'm making then I stop. You can't force it.

I'm not a modder myself, but to all of you who do mod, thank you! You've made Morrowind 10x the game it was out of the box, and that is saying a lot! Your work is appreciated!

I scrapped a fairly simple project of mine simply because I was burnt out on the idea. (It was badly in need of balancing, anyway, which I can't do myself.) It happens from time to time.

For me that was the testing. Worst part about modding... Finding all the stupid crap I missed and then going over it once, twice, thrice, and still fretting about hosing-up someones game. Some days it it took all my energy just to stay focused and keep the TV off (when it's reruns of The Fresh Prince, you just know it's all about avoidance).

Yeah, it gets really tough. Typically I just have to wait for the little voice inside me to say It's CS time!
