GECK Questions

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:02 am

Never really played with the geck so I have some questions that I want to get answered before I start playing around with it. At the moment I DLed it from the mirror site and installed it/moved the application to my folder containing FONV *got an error, but fixed it*.

1. When I go to save what i'm working on does it over write the actual game or does it save what i'm working on as a Plugin that can be loaded/unloaded from the game? Want to make sure I don't screw with something by accident then load it up having corrupted my game.

2. How do you incorporate new sounds into the game? Want to make a plugin that has some new sounds for some of the weapons.

3. How would I incorporate the sounds from the FO3 game into FONV? Want to for example replace some of the Mister Gutsy bot voices with the oldschool military voice.

4. Is there an option on an item to distinguish it from Hard Core mode and Normal mode or are there two different items for that?

Well IT (ha, get it >.>) should be mentioned that you should always run the GECK in Admin Mode. Here are some answers:

1. It just saves it as a plugin in your /data/ directory which can be enabled/disable at any time. You won't corrupt your files.
2. Save them as a mp3, open the dialogue box or weapon box, and look for sound file.
3. Open up the Sounds.bsa at your Fallout 3 map using FOMM, look for the designated sound file and open up the Mister Gutsy box at the GECK, choose "Dialogue" and make any changes you'd like.

2 and 3 might not be very clear if you haven't previously used the GECK, so I suggest you first have a look at the http://geck.gamesas.com wiki.

Thanks for the quick reply I was mostly concerned about the 1st thing since I want to make a Weight Augmented Management System or WAMS for short. What I plan to do is go in and redo a bunch of the weights on items especially for hardcoe mode. Know a person already did something similar, but I personally want to go through EVERY single item including ammo reconfiguring the weight. To me missiles having a weight of 3 wasn't enough and I want them to have a weight of 5 since Missiles are heavy svckers. I would also put the Fission Batteries up to 10 instead of 6.

Wanted to reply to my own post instead of making a new one possibly angering the thread gods.

Had problems loading up the information for the GECK, but managed to go to the Data... option in the File menu and load up the FalloutNewVegas.esm file since it didn't seem to load for me.

Currently having some problems navigating around:

1. Why do I see the Fallout 3 Bobble Heads in the NV stuff when there aren't any bobble heads in the game?

2. Where do I find the weight of the ammunition for hardcoe mode when i'm searching around?

3. How would I determine what files are there for NV and what is there for just being there? Can I use a filter option somewhere to filter out just stuff for new vegas?

4. Under what area would I find the stuff for schematics?

Remember, it's illegal to distribute assets from other games with your mod. If this is a personal mod, that's fine, but it doesn't sound like it.

Why not?

If it's in the NV BSPs you're free to use it. It's irrelevant if it's actually used in game. You can check the 'count' and 'users' columns in the Object Window for an idea though.

No worries i'm not talking about taking sounds from a completely unrelated game like HL2 and putting them into NV. Just want to take the sniper rifle sound from FO3 and put it into FONV possibly replace the anti-material rifle firing sound with it for that bigger bass.

Remember, it's illegal to distribute assets from other games with your mod. If this is a personal mod, that's fine, but it doesn't sound like it.

I just found it odd and makes me think the GECK was looking at my FO3 folder. Problem with that idea is I selected the FONV.esm file + the geck application is in my FONV folder in the steam area. The FO3 folder is in a completely different section of my D partition for my HD.

Why not?

I'm trying to figure out what stuff goes with what game and how to modify it. My biggest question is how do I determine the stats for an item in Hard Core mode and modify those stats.

At the moment I have a couple of ideas I want to try out, but want to start slow first and see if I can tweak some things. First thing i'll tweak is the Fission batteries making them weigh 10 instead of 6 then have them be valued at 125 caps instead of 75.
