import creatures from oblivion?

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 7:59 am

i'm wondering, because of the similarities between the fallout 3/NV engine and the oblivion engine and their toolsets, would it be technically possible to put creatures designed for oblivion into NV by simply creating a creature in the GECK and assigning it the files used for an oblivion creature?

what about buildings and other objects?

You can't take content from TES IV (or FO3 for that matter) and put it in to FONV. However if someone made a new model or critter chances are they can go back to the original and export it for FONV with minimal work.

why isn't it possible? if it's a format issue, the files could simply be converted? why create a new model?

It's a legal issue. The content (models, artwork) in Oblivion is (probably) not licensed for use in Fallout New Vegas. (If it were licensed, then Bethesda/Obsidian would have included as a resource already in the BSA files.)

there's no legal problem. plenty of creatures have been made for oblivion with mods. i was talking about importing those. is it possible to convert those creatures/buildings/objects so they can be imported into NV?

Player made creatures can be used, assuming the mod maker gave permission.

Bethesda made creatures cannot be used due to legal issues.

sigh... i respect the wishes of the people that made the content originally,

but i want to know if it's TECHNICALLY possible. or would the models have to be converted or something?

99.99% OF ALL so called customs were based on and or used some Oblivion assets and NOT A SINGLE PIECE of those are allowed to be ported over period.

I can count on my fingers alone the amount of released truly Custom Creatures that ever got released for Oblivion and I am not even sure all of them got released.

Malo's Spider
Konipton's Jellyfish -> It might have been a Netch.
NickOp's Kwama Forager
I helped 3-4 other people get their critters into Oblivion and helped 2 more get critters into FO3 and even animated a Great White Shark for someone, so there does exist a few creatures that are able to be imported into FONV legally if you can get the authors permission

That is pretty much the entire list because I have revoked the use of the ones I released of which there were only 4, and they were some of my earlier works -> so not that great though I still love the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/images/9396-1-1254270348.jpg, and even included it in http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9396.

Sure its possible but considering the amount of people who know how to do it are small pretty much just me -> it will not be happening.

Ouch man... get a little cocky there much? :P

Ok, ignoring the fact that he says no one can do it (I released my own in Oblivion, thanks for forgetting about me *sniff*) it's not THAT hard, but it is time consuming. Though I wouldn't put it past people, if there's enough interest, someone could do it.

Must have missed it -> though I have yet to see anything Custom included in any Creature Overhauls except Malo's Spider.

What did you make ?

Custom skeleton, animations and model, only thing I used were vanilla chest textures to attempt to get it matching in game.

I like Mimics !, make It look like a FootLocker and your in business for a conversion. :)

I do remember conversing about this in a thread some time back -> was never sure if it got finished or released though.

Give Martigan something to start with along with the few Re-Textures of Ghouls and SM's that are already available.

I don't think mimics would fit in Fallout (much as I love them), but it would be really neat to have a mod where you activate an apparently normal container and instead of a container menu popping up the box animated opening and a giant ant/radscorpion/molerat/giant rat/whatever else there is crawled out and attacked you.

Show some imagination there Showler :)

He could just say it was a Robot some Crazed Psychopathic Robotics Engineer creating as a way to protect his/her goods ! -> or as a product aimed at merchants to protect their goods from sneaky thief's.

Sorry I wasn't very specific and I should have been.

Any actual in-game content cannot be used in other games because of legal issues. You aren't licensed to use artwork from one game in another and you couldn't release the mod without releasing the artwork files along with it. This restriction also covers anything that uses game content as a base so any altered/retextured content can't be transferred between games.

If someone makes wholly unique artwork and releases it for one game I can't think of a legal reason why it couldn't be ported over to a different game. It's bad form to do this without the original artist's permission but I don't believe there is any legal impediment.

If you are taking original artwork that was released for one game it's probably relatively easy to go back in to 3DSM (or whatever program was used) and port it to a different game. Going between FO3 and FONV is probably particularly straightforward.

I think at this point it's best to give the discussion a rest. If you have any further questions mezo6 feel free to PM me. If you want anything official you'll have to contact Gstaff or Nick - and if you do make sure you're explicit that you're referring to wholly unique fan creations or they'll probably assume you're referring to the basic art resources of FO3, etc.
